Verizon iPhone Losing Data Connection

I've been noticing this over the past day or so- Every few hours, my iPhone will "drop" the data connection. Voice calls work fine, but I'm unable to use any data (surfing the web, using apps that access the internet, etc). Has anyone else experienced this? I need to turn off and turn it back on in order to make it work...

I am having the same problem with my phone. I live in the Chicago Suburbs.

I drive 50 miles to work and sometimes as soon as I hop off my network at home I will have no data connection until I get work... no data for an hour of driving!

I basically drive along 294. I should have a rock solid connection the entire time.

I can make and receive calls.

Last week while commuting with a coworker I could not get a data connection for over 30 minutes. I tried everything. Turning on and off airplane mode... Turning off and on the device... Making a call. Nothing... Just dead. She has Verizon on another phone and her data connection worked.

I wonder if the delay in releasing 4.3 for Verizon iPhones is because of a delay in updating the baseband for Verizon devices?

I am no slouch when it comes to Apple products. I have been using them since the Apple II gs days and have had countless other mac products since then. Did mac tech support in college. Needless to say I know my way around a Mac.

I have an appointment at the Apple Store in Oakbrook. I will let everyone know how it goes.

Ok I went to the Apple Store in Oakbrook IL today and told them what was happening. Apparently others are having this issue however they were not sure that they had the solution nailed down yet and their "head Genius" had fixed it at least once. The "Genius" I was working with was very nice but after 30 minutes of working with me gave up and went on his lunch break and handed me off to someone else. It was clear that none of the employees had any real hands on experience with the Verizon iPhone. Only one other employee was known to have a Verizon iPhone.

Some successfully resolved the issue by doing this:

Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings
Then power the phone off and and back on again.

It appears that after you do this it may take a couple minutes for the phone to reconnect with the 3G network and do data properly.

This however did not work with my phone.

It was kinda great because my phone was exhibiting the problem right in front of the "Genius."

I would get a data connection error (It would be helpful for those with the same issue if someone would post the error they get when their data request times out so others can pick it up when searching).

They replaced my phone. The "Genius" assured me it was new and that they did not have refurbished phones yet because the phone was so new.

After activating the new phone it took several minutes before it would properly connect to the 3G network.

I will keep and eye on it and will report back if this phone has the same problem.

I wonder apple is waiting to release 4.3 on Verizon iPhones because of this specific problem?

I too have this same problem. I bought my phone on 2/21/11. I noticed this exact same issue, and I too am in Chicago. I called Apple on 3/1, was told not aware of any data connection/loss issues, but they instructed to call VZW. I did and also VZW claims no issues. I still have the intermittant problem (once every couple of days) I haven't pinned to any specific activity, like I was surfing then a call came in and then after call couldn't connect, or was on WIFI, and then turned off, etc....I also haven't noticed if my phone still says 3G when I don't have data connection or if I have the circle instead. I am leaning towards the phone showing 3G.

I called Apple again today, says has heard of this issue, checked with senior advisor, and they also called VWZ that said yes has reported data issues in the Chicago area, but not sure if it is the phone and how it is working with data here, or if it is the VZW network. Said to toggle off airplane mode for a couple of minutes and then back on. That will do the same as powering phone off and back on, which is what I had been doing to get data to flow again. Told me if not resolved in a week or so, to call back and may replace phone.

I live in the Detroit area & am having the exact same issues, including it locking up completely & shutting down today. I took it to a Verizon store a week or so ago & was told that it was because I had WiFi turned on & that & 3G were competing, that I was supposed to turn WiFi on & off as I entered an area with WiFi, Say what? He also said I was supposed to clear my history (everyday?) I have followed the steps listed in previous posts here & twice in the past week dialed *228 for updates. After both of those times I got voicemails that I had received hours earlier, not even knowing that I had missed calls. My BF has AT&T iPhone & sitting next to each other, he can get to the same websites immediately while my progress bar moves slightly & then just sits & eventually errors. This is a problem while we were out & looking for a map, could not get it on mine, I took his phone & had them in seconds. I am going to go to Apple this weekend.

Hey everybody. I am back.

This issue is still not resolved.

The new phone wont fix the problem. I am not sure if it is Verizon, Apple or both but whatever it is is it driving me crazy.

Data drops regularly. For example: Just the other day I had not data for over 30 minutes while driving around Chicagoland. I was restarting using the suggested remedy over and over again while driving around attempting to get it back up. This is random but the new norm with this phone.

It is not safe for me to be fiddling with the phone while driving and it is unacceptable to have no data when out and about for multiple reasons.

I get that you're upset but isn't it just as dangerous to be checking your data while driving? Not to belittle your obvious troubles...just find it interesting that you would imply that your safety is impaired while driving solely because of data issues when despite how so many people seem to think otherwise, handling your phone physically while driving is a very dangerous thing...for yourself and others.

As far as the data issue goes...I would think that since it's not happening to everyone it may just be a local network issue. The running theme seems to be Chicago area users...stay on Verizon to make sure they at least investigate a network issue in the area. It's not the device itself...you got a new one and that seems to show that the device isn't the cause of the issue...at least not directly. Hopefully they can get you all some true help on this issue.
