Can you adjust Right/Left volume balance
iPhone, iOS 4

iPhone, iOS 4
It is nested, but in IOS 5.0 you can. Just go:
Settings>General>Accessibility
Under the Mono Audio switch there is a L/R slider.
The balance slider does work with the iPhone 5 dock

which I assume uses digital audio since it has a lightning connector.
This is unexpected, since the volume buttons on the phone don't affect the audio from the dock.
I had forgotten all about the fact that I had once changed this setting, and have been searching for weeks what was wrong with the bluetooth audio streaming to my new car... Thanks ! 😊
I'm glad this helps someone, because we have so many battery powered portable digital to analog converters coming out some of which have optical ports which extract the digital signal from the iPhone it is important that balance control is offered in order for these to be useful in an automobile setting. Otherwise you would need some sort of preamp, Or have access to your amplifiers gain controls have any sort of balance control.
What this means is that if you have a car audio system where the head unit cannot be removed because it also controls other functions of your car such as the climate control or is connected through a CAM/BUS–Well then you can leave that head unit in place and then use one of these portable units in conjunction with an external car amplifier to bypass your car audio system.
This can result in much better sound quality.
Units to look for with optical output from an iOS device..

ADL-X1
of note:
Sony PHA-2 (can do DSD files)
Thanks for the solution! I was worried I had somehow adjusted the setting. Either my headphones are shot, or my ears are shot. But now I don' t have to wonder.
Whooops..... ADl X1 when used with an iOS device TURNS OFF ITS TOSLINK OPTICAL OUT!!!!!

I have an Iphone 4s, and I have a right/left slider under general/accessibility/hearing. It can slide left and right without apparent presets. Rather fine tuning. However I have found that when you achieve the balance to your liking and
a. take your finger off the button
b. or otherwise let go
the button moves slightly left or right. Changing the balance. This is annoying because I notice the tiniest fraction of change.
But you may also notice that if you first put your finger on the button, then pull your finger DOWN, you can still control the slider in the same manner.
I try to slide my finger down extremely slowly until my finger leaves the screen. This helps preserve the balance without changing it. I also control where the slider is vertically on the screen. Even with this action sometimes the slider jerks. This is EXTREMELY irritating me.
One other thing that might effect audio levels in one ear bud and not the other. …
Check for a build up of ear wax in the earbud holes. … One side may be completely blocked. … You can, very gently, clean out that buildup with a small tool. … I used the point of an exact blade.
I hope after 4 years that the original poster has resolved the problem.
Sure. … But there are always new folk wandering through. A little extra information about the more recent earbuds could not hurt for those folk wandering through.
Move this helpful post to the top of the list. I almost missed it.
A few years later, but this was extremely helpful. Thank you!!
Thank you for advice which has remedied the issue.. Disappointing that the guy in the apple shop could not offer similar help but said uneconomical to repair but would happily sell me an iPhone six.
Outstanding - perfect answer. Works in 10.3.1 on iPhone 6s+ ɬɧąŋƙ ყơų
