Thunderbolt Does Not Detect Display

Just got my new MacBook Pro along with the Thunderbolt To DVI adapter. When I connect to my ViewSonic monitor...nothing. The new MacBook Pro does not detect it. I'm using the same DVI cable that I have been using to connect my old MacBook Pro, and it detects the monitor just fine. I cannot find any information about this. Ideas?

The monitor is ViewSonic VX2235WM-3.

I just got back from the Apple Store and as expected they confirmed that the 13" MBP 2011 will not drive my monitor. It was able to drive a 14" Dell monitor they had but that was about it. Also it will not drive the monitor in VGA or DVI. We tried driving the monitor on a 2011 15" with no luck as well.

I am going to try a solution someone else got working since it is so cheap:
The "genius" suggested I go to Best Buy to try the macbook and MDP-DVI cable on different >monitors there, which seemed like more of a waste of time, but I did it anyway. At Best Buy, the >geeksquad guy looked at my set-up and was confident that all I needed was a MDP to DVI female >adapter connected to a DVI-DVI. And, sure enough, it works flawlessly.

What worked: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00342UT02 plus http://www.amazon.com/Dynex-DX-DVI2M-cable-single-DVI-D/dp/B000H35G1S

I don't know if this will help you or not. I purchased an HDMI adapter from monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2) and had the same problem.

The display would flash on for a quick second, and then dissapear (and would not be detected in preferences). I then realized that the program I use, gfxCardStatus, was set to always use the integrated graphics. Secondary output will not work unless using the discrete card. I switched it over to dynamic/discrete card and it worked!

Yup the new updates don't do jack **** this is why you DON'T use intel graphics they suck its too late for me to return my MacBook Pro 13 in which is clearly D.O.A. apple needs to compensate all of us with some sort of return WITHOUT restocking fee program my 2007 MacBook can connect to my HDTV but my 2011 MacBook Pro can't?

Count me in as another victim. My MBP 13 with Thunderbolt isn't getting recognized with a mini display -DVI adaptor into a Viewsonic VX2235wm. My other MBP17 Intel Core Duo powers it fine. I just got back from Apple Store where the Tech scratched his head, wasn't aware of this thread, told me he had no ideas. Doing a reboot with Command Option PR doesn't work either. Oddly, the MBP 13 did power a 23 inch cinema display at the Apple Store. AARGH. This must be a Viewsonic issue at a minimum as it worked with the Apple Display. Going to call Apple Support and see if there is additional help available.

I've also been having problems like this since upgrading from a 2010 MacBook to a 2011 15" MacBook Pro.

I had been using this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ES241I with the MacBook in order to avoid the clunky adapter. I never had any problems with it.

My external display is a Samsung SMB2330 that I bought at Costco. I'll probably upgrade to a Cinema Display eventually, but I'm waiting for a Thunderbolt version.

When I connect using the Amazon cable, the MBP detects the display, but the display just keeps cycling between the analog and digital inputs before finally going to sleep. System Profiler shows the display recognized as:

SMB2330:

Resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz

Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)

Display Serial Number: H9FZ508212

Mirror: Off

Online: Yes

Rotation: Supported

Television: Yes

For some reason, the MacBook also saw it as a 1080p TV, though the image (once calibrated) is fine.

In experimenting with the problem, I tried using an Apple mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter and a DVI cable, and it works perfectly. So obviously, the problem isn't with the display or the MBP, but with the Thunderbolt port's compatibility with certain cables/combinations.

I was hoping that today's TB firmware update would have fixed the issue, but apparently not.

As another data point, I just tried the same cable from Amazon (mentioned in my previous post) with a Dell E2310H display and it works perfectly. The resolution is shows as 1920 x 1080 rather than the 1080p that I get with the Samsung display.

I would love to know why Apple's Thunderbolt port is so picky about combinations of cable and display.

Not seeing any way to connect new MB Pro 17" (just purchased, Model MacBookPro 8,3) to a VGA display (video projector).

Can I use the current mini display to VGA adapter in the Thunderbolt port? There are no other ports on the new 17" MB Pro (has magsafe power, ethernet, thunderbolt, fw800, 3 usb and that's it).

Its kind of an issue because I teach. I can't have a classroom of 20+ students crowded around my laptop. I need to be able to plug my MB Pro into the classroom video projector, which has the standard VGA plug.

Any ideas?

I had a display that would not recieve the computer signal. I resolved it using an adpater (ROCKFISH RF-AP305) The adapter was MDP (Mini DisplayPort- Computer side) to HDMI (monitor side) available at Best Buy. The adapter had a female fitting so I could get a regular HDMI cable to monitor and computer. The monitor (Viewsonic) is working fine.

You may want to try adapter that is MDP to VGA and then use a standard VGA cable to the monitor. I visited Apple store and call the tech support and they were of no help.
