Error code -8076

I have recently just changed over external hard drives, changing from a 120GB to a 1 TB. The problem is that every single file and folder in my new hard drive is now only read/write accessible by me. This is an issue since I have others that need to access and save files into this external.
I have found in other posts a way to change the settings to every file and folder within this external (Command + I, change priveleges, then click apply to enclosed items at the bottom) My problem is that when I try to do this, I get an error message that says " An unexpected error occured (error code -8076). I can't for the life of me find anywhere that will explain what this code means or how to fix it.

Does anyone know the solution?
Thanks!

I've been trying for the last hour to rename a bunch of downloaded files on my computer's own built-in hard drive, using the "Rename" function in Finder. It lets me select all relevant files, lets me specify which text to replace and what to replace it with, but every time I try, it gives me the Unexpected Error -8076. When I use the Get Info function on "Downloads", there is NO "Ignore permissions" checkbox. I am able to set Permissions for all files so that I can read and write, and yes, I needed to use my admin password to do this; but it did nothing. I used "Force Quit", relaunched Finder, checked individual files - still "read and write" permissions - and when I tried Rename, same -8076 error. I'm using OS X 10.11.6. Anyone out there have a clue?
