Did Rev. D iMacs come in "Bondi" blue?

I just picked up an original Bondi blue iMac for 4,000 yen (about $30) complete with keyboard, mouse, installation CDs and manuals. It works PERFECTLY.

However, I'm curious about this machine. It's Bondi blue, but the Apple System Profiler indicates it has a 333Mhz processor--which would make it a Revision D machine. I thought the only blue flavor of Rev. D machines was "blueberry." Am I mistaken?

Not a big deal at all, of course. Main thing is, it works 🙂

GeeKay...

Actually there was never an official Rev C or Rev D iMac model. The actual Rev A and Rev B (Bondi models) was distinguished via part number as a final suffix letter. The iMac 266 started the Flavor Saver lineup and a later a 333MHz machine came to be the final tray loading iMac.

I considered that possibility--that the machine's processor card had been upgraded--but I don't think that's what happened with this machine. Given the source from which I bought it, I'm 99.9% positive that it is an original, unmodified machine.

I wonder if the fact that it is a model that was originally sold in Japan has anything to do with it. The markings on the case indicate it was manufactured in Korea. Perhaps Apple built Bondi blue iMacs with 333Mhz processors exclusively for the Japanese market? If so, it wouldn't be the first time Apple has sold a Japan-exclusive model. Remember the PowerBook 550C or the PowerBook 2400 with the 240 MHz processor?

Or, perhaps I just don't know my Bondi blue from Blueberry blue, and I really have a Blueberry iMac after all!

The mystery continues...

GeeKay...

I do not think your thread as useless or silly. It is just a simple technical curiosity.

Anyway the Bondi was slighty more green then the Blueberry but the Blueberry does kind of resemble the Bondi when in a room with more open lighting. The Blue does turn a bit green, in other words.

Now if curiosity does kill the cat, one can crack it open and look over the components. IRdA cable inside the bottom cover would be a tattle tale of a processor upgrade. The serial number and perhaps TattleTech (below link) may be a non-invasive way to check as well.

Thanks, everyone, for not thinking I'm being silly 🙂

Anyway, I've come around now to thinking that what I have is indeed a Blueberry machine. I don't notice any green in the plastic coloring at all.

Also, I think I may have discovered another characteristic that distinguishes Bondi iMacs from later models. Take a look at the image here:

Notice that there is a "circle" of Bondi blue around the hole in the door to the USB ports? My iMac doesn't have that blue circle--it's the same transluscent off-white color of the door itself.

It is pretty easy to determine if it is a Bondi Blue.

You all forget about two little things Apple has done between the original iMacs (Bondi Blue)and the flavoured ones.

Can you see the IR Port at the left front next to the speaker? It is these typicall black-red plastic you can only see on the left side, not on the right side, next to the speaker.

Do you see the Mezzanine slot? That means when you open the port cover on the right side do you see a slot underneath the speaker and USB ports tightend with two small screws?

If you have both it's a Bondi Blue, if not it is one of the five flavours. In my point of view the original Bondi Blue is somekind of "green turqouise" and the green flavoured one is more green less blue than Bondi Blue was.

Look into Google Picture search to find pictures of Bondi Blue and the Blueberry iMac and try to compare it with your machine. Remeber, the IR port and the Mezzanine slot have only existed on Bondi Blue. If you have both it is Bondi Blue.

And here are pictures from the 333 iMac:

and
http://www.bootsector.com/products/product.asp?categoryid=1000&manufacturer_id=1017&keywords=&productid=1485

You can see that the IR is missing at the front (left side, the cover next to the speaker is not black but green) and not so clear, that trapdoor never-been-used-slot is missing.
