No one's stopping you from modding an iPad1 (or iPad2 or iPhone4, etc.) Just like with cars, the amount of the mod will determine whether the warranty is voided or not, but neither the auto manufacturer nor Apple will stop you from modding the device. You just can't expect any warranty if the mod is that extensive. I'm not saying it can't be done, but what you're asking for is a "factory supported" upgrade. An A5 in a iPad1 is not "factory supported."

For example, I can add a seat cover to my car or a "skin" to the iPad and neither would void the warranty. But the analogy to replacing the iPad1's A4 with an A5 is replacing the 4 cylinder engine in a Ford Focus with the 5.0L V-8 from a Ford Mustang. Both are engines manufactured by Ford, but since Ford never offered the Focus with a 5.0L V-8, you've voided your warranty on the Focus.

The Focus is "better" with a V-8, and Ford won't stop you. And specifically if you have enough technical skill with welding and such to shoehorn in a V-8 into a Ford Focus, then you will be able to make the combination work. Just don't expect Ford to perform any warranty work on the Focus. So goes with the A5 transplant. It's not a simple thing, but if you have the equipment and experience to solder all the connections, you could get it to work. But Apple ain't gonna help ya.

(And if you say that it's "ridiculous" to put such a physically large engine in a small car like the Focus, then you've never seen a 70's Chevy Vega with a 454ci big block V-8. Or a Ford Anglia with a V-8 and a 6-71 blower. 🙂 Neither was something that the manufacturer's offered or collaborated on. But both were "better" for drag racing than stock forms of the vehicles. Tell a redneck it can't be done.... 😝 )

(edit: sorry, the post is supposed to be directed to iPadkisser, not necessarily at Meg.)

I appreciate your words but pardon me you have gone a little too far, a ipad 1 and 2 arent like ford focus and a mustang, because when you drop that sample its like you are comparing a iphone with a ipod nano, im talking about same iPads, ford focus is something totally else in every single thing on ford mustang, btw I drive a 2008 red inferno dodge charger, and i can improve it to be as fast as the dodge charger SRT8 , now i thought that A5 could be done with ipad 1 because they are both iPADS. They held th same name, and i thought it could be possible to do after a short visit to the nearest app store ( nearest app store for me is in another country , ugh 😝 )

Several things to consider .

A and 1
The iPad is sold as an integral device NOT a PC

B and 2
The case is a sealed unit - No visible screws or clips

C and 3
IF you manage to gain access to the innards (Ifixit site can help) you are confronted with
A4 Arm chip being soldered directly to the tiny logic board. (NOT socketed)

So if taking it a as hobbyist approach you then have to separate to A4 chip using heat (around 200˚ C) on points just a few microns in size.

You then have to source an A5 chip -Apple won't sell you one and neither will ANY AASP so its going to be grey market (Stolen - From China) quality unknown.

Right got your mythical A5 chip or some sort of ARM equivalent you next line up the mycroscopic pins and solder to the logic board again using heat as above .
Do you know what pins go where if indeed if there are same number - NO !

If you have been extraordinarily lucky (Have access to a PCB lab perhaps to carry out above works) you haven't fried to logic board.

You now have to rebuild the iPad and hope that the A5 chip has been programmed with all the controllers necessary to boot including the IOS (Thats not available commercially either ) or you could try to find an android distribution i suppose.

D and 4
So just give up - Sell your iPad for $350- $400 make up the extra $100 out of your own pocket.

E and 5
You now have iPad2 and are happy and someone else has a discounted nearly new IPad and are happy.
The global Green movement are happy because you haven't placed your destroyed ipad in landfill.
Finally no one is prosecuted for theft in China.
