HP w2207h Monitor not working with Mac Mini

I am trying to connect an HP w2207h monitor to a Mac Mini via an HDMI cable and can't get it to work. The monitor repeatedly alternates between black and the view that the computer is displaying in a sequence of about 2 or 3 seconds black and 0.1 second of desktop. If I push on of the adjustment buttons on the monitor, then the desktop will be displayed for a second.

I have successfully used the Mac Mini and HDMI cable with my Samsung LCD TV which suggests that the problem is not with those components. I also have successfully connected Windows laptops via both HDMI and serial cables. Suggestions--perhaps a setting on either the Mac Mini or the monitor that is needed?

Mac Mini, Mac OS X (10.6.6)
