15" Macbook Pro 2011 - Screen too Dark

I'm struck by how dark my new 2011 15" Macbook screen looks compared to my previous 2008 Macbook, and my external display. Even turned up to full brightness, the internal display whites are nothing more than warm greys.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Unfortunately, same here. Just went from a 2010 MacBook Pro 13" to new MacBook Air 13" and the difference in screen quality is striking - the screen on the Air is not as bright, the whites are not white but yellow, and the colours are not as rich. Even my iPod touch 4G has obviously superior brightness and white reproduction. Tried calibrating but to no avail. Did not use migration assistant.

Screen model number: LTH133BT01A03.

I'm gonna send it back to Apple. Really rather dissapointed.

So, I have done a few tests on this.

The LCD panel is actually cool by default, greys are neutral if a little on the blue side. So, the yellow is coming from the calibration in OS X to counter it to a "warm" color temp of 65k.. Sadly, it's over done, perhaps was calibrated on a different panel.

So I have calibrated my LCD panel, and came up with two different calibrations.. One that is very close to 65k, and one that is kinda in between 65k and a cooler color. Try these out and see if they help you.

You will need to drop the two files in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays

Once in there, just open up system preferences, and go to displays, color tab, and viola, two new calibrated files. If you need any other color temperature, let me know and I can adjust them.

Keep in mind though, I did this on my 2 week old MacBook Pro 15" 2011.. If by any chance the ID's are different on the display, this calibration may not even load.

BitBob, I've got the same issue here, same panel:

LTN154MT07

Color LCD

It started out as a faint discoloring at the bottom of the screen about a month ago and now it's at both sides too and it got much more yellow. Also it seems like it gets slightly worse during use, so maybe a heat issue of some sort.

purchased june 2011 at applestore SF, so i'll make sure to get the panel replaced this month.

Whitescreen, full brightness, you can slightly see the yellow in the bottom.

Blackscreen at an angle, you can see a lot of leakage around the edge of the screen.

I think it's caused by heat and if i had to guess the cause is that the macbook often starts venting heat if I shut the screen - by spinning up the fans to high rpm for about 10 seconds just before it goes into sleep modus- which heats up the panel as most of the hot air will be blown in between the body and the screen. Why it does this, no idea, I would guess it looses the heat over time as it is in sleep modus. Hopefully the new panel can cope with this cooling "feature".
