rastertoescpll failed

I am posting this under the generic title, because there are just so many people apparently having this problem, and they use a subject which is specific to their printer model, so the big picture gets lost.

This is a problem affecting a whole range of Epson printers, not just one, or two.

Lets start by saying that the common advice of "delete and re-add" is NOT a fix.
Please don't clutter up this thread with that worthless "advice".

Deleting the EPSON driver directory is probably not a fix either, unless you have an old printer installation and recently added a new printer or did a software upgrade of your printer drivers. In that case, thie may help.

BTW, there is a new set (February 2011) set of Epson drivers available on the Apple support site.
For me, this partially fixes some problems.

Where I am currently is that after installing this (huge) driver update from Apple, I can get my Epson 1280 to print if I connect it directly to my Macbook Pro.

This is significant progress.

However, when I re-attach the same printer to my Windows XP desktop system, and add the remote printer (remember, this is the same printer, just accessed via smb rather than directly), I get the infamous "rastertoescpll failed" issue.

Seeing so many hits on Google for this problem, it is clear that there is a serious stability issue in this component.

Finger pointing between Epson and Apple doesn't help.
We are customers of both companies, and those two companies need to collaborate on fixing this issue which is doing continuing damage to the reputation of both.
