Problems using iPhone proxy settings for web tunnel through home network

I have an iPhone 3G which I'd like to use to access my home network's web tunnel through either the phone's wifi proxy or VPN. I have a G3 blue and white which is my home web server, and I run my iBook through a SOCKS proxy which was pretty easy to set up; opened the port 22 pinhole in my gateway and log on through Terminal, with a proxy set up in the iBook's Sys Prefs, Network using port 9999. It works like a charm on my laptop. I'd like to be able to surf through the same web tunnel on my iPhone but so far no luck getting the setup right. In the wifi proxy settings I've put in the static server address of the G3, 99.x.xx.xx, using both the http:// prefix and without it, tried port 22 as well as port 9999, and have not been able to connect. Not sure what the missing link is, if I need to open a different port or what. I know the iPhone is not a SOCKS proxy but I'm not sure how to deal with the difference. I've tried messing around with the VPN settings too but I'm not too knowledgable in this subject; everything on the web says to use a pac file from your system administrator etc, which is me, who doesn't know what he's doing. I'm not terrifically smart in this subject, which is why I need a little help. Thanks much for any advice.
