I found the same thing and have started a new routine ... when I first access ATV2, I go to Computers and turn off Home Sharing and then turn it back on. This 'preemptive' activity then allows my ATV2 to access my library and I don't get any dropouts ... for at least 2 hours, my recent watching time.
Had a few days without issue now it is ugly. Constant drops. I've tried 6 differnt wifi channels, reset everyting, etc, etc.
Roku box is on the way.
there’s definitively something wrong, I’m really ****** off with this, I can’t make it work, I did everything, screensaver off, sleepmode off, DNS checked out, etc....and there’s always something that does not work. I think I will investigate on the flying capabilities of the ATV2. I’m living at Madrid, no 50 floors building but I guess 10 floors will just be enough for that ****.
I am having the same problems as everyone else - cannot believe Apple isnt responding to this issue. The AppleTV is a great device if it just worked. I have done everything, including changing to Airport Extreme wifi, upgraded everything I can think of, rebooted many many times. My AppleTV now wont upgrade itself and about to tackle THAT problem as well. I buy Apple because "everything just works" .... they are starting to trash that reputation if this isnt fixed soon.
Something happened to my ATV2, cough cough, and now I have no trouble playing media from a shared directory on my computer.
Just an idea....
Adding to the long list of unhappy users.....
I recently converted to 2 x Apple TV2 and 2 x Airport Express with an expectation of the Apple 'it just works' experience.
The Airport's connected to hi-fi's work well and the synchronisation is impressive as one is wired and the other wireless.
The Apple TV's are both wired and work well except when they wake. Although the shared main libraryname is visible, the content is not present. Unplugging/re-plugging the network connection and the content re-appears. My ITunes runs on a Win 7 PC that never sleeps and has only internal drives.
Trawling the Web and this issue appears to have been a significant problem for many months.
Either Apple has a fundamental hardware design issue in the ATV2 they cannot fix, or there is a synical assumption that it's not worth fixing until the media raise it as a problem.
With the forthcoming Airplay Mirroring in iOS5 set to be the biggest leap forward in the connected living room that the industry has ever seen, the imperfect performance of the Apple TV is going to be much more visible. Perhaps then Apple will extract their digits and fix this?
The Apple tech seem clueless about what to do when I told him my itunes kept dropping from my ATV2. I am another victim of this problem and not sure why apple is unaware of this issue. Hope it gets fixed soon.
I installed beta 2 of the Apple TV software on one of my boxes last night. Seems to have fixed the problem for me. Will watch for another day, then update the other box and report back.
cool, I will try that. Thanks. I finally got to download the newest version 4.2.2
didnt work for me 😟
It is so frustrating to have Apple not update the faulty software. I called and complained to Apple Support back in mid April - after a software update made it so I could not access my Home Share. I spent 3 days of time on the phone and in email conversations with Apple, before they agreed to replace my original ATV 2. The replacement arrived and I ran through the setup - and it worked fine. I never dropped my network connection and my share was always there.
I was an idiot yesterday and tried the 4.2.2 (2203) update which didn't work. As soon as it was complete and I'd rebooted everything, I could see the Home Share but not access my library. Everything else works, even did the network test with no issues.
I even purchased AppleCare for this one product and will probably be calling for a replacement or a software update (I am signed up as a developer so may try the beta software as a patch). For the life of me, I can't understand how Apple can even think of selling TV's with embedded ATV software until they get their networking fixed to standards.
I will continue following this thread for pertinent information.
u know i have faced this issue - but my case after very long time i discovered that if i am connected to the network through a cable i can not do the sharing with any device and when ever i remove it i will be accessing and sharing my device ???!! so strange for such a fine products having this strange issue
I've tried this morning resetting everything to factory settings, networking via ethernet cable or via wireless G/N.
The networking works fine on either wireless G or N settings through the testing, and via regular ethernet also.
However my device NEVER shows up in Itunes as Apple TV, and the shared home libraries are inaccessible.
I primarily used the ATV2 to listen to music and watch a large collection of music videos purchased through ITunes, while working out or relaxing. Now the primary functionality I bought it for is gone. I can watch YouTube or get Netflix through a variety of other services.
I guess it makes a fine brick.
For what it's worth - my ATV2 also doesn't show up in my iTunes as a device - never, never. That means that I can't view any media (videos, etc.) that are stored on the ATV2 through my computer. But I can see everything I have on my computer through the AVT. Not sharing, is it!
ATV2 is not supposed to show in iTunes.
Only ATV 1 had that feature.
ATV2 is supposed to STREAM content from your home shared libraries ... even if you have multiple ones in your household. There is no content stored there.
Too bad it is broken for many of us! :-(
