Before going through all the trouble of port forwarding and all that, try shutting down your Modem and resetting you ATV. This is what apple had me do, and it worked great!
Thanks for the help, but trust me, I tried all that very early on in this troubleshooting process. This has been a long, troubling process, and I could only wish that it had been something that simple. Besides, the home sharing dropouts are not just with the 3 ATV's I have, but also with the 2 iphones and ipad. It may stay connected for up to a dfay, but will always eventually cut out and I will have to restart itunes.
Setting to just DMZ didn't work for me. I was hopeful it did for online games.
Ok, thanks for the reply. I have now forwarded the ports as per your instructions, all ATV's have static ip's, and dmz is off. I have two ATVs hard wired, and one wireless. We shall see. I am crossing my fingers!
I had the same problem. My Apple TV 3rd generation was dropping out my home sharing each 3 or 4 minutes. I changed my router to a Cisco Linksys E4200 and it's now working fine since many hours.
Before, I had an Apple Air Port Extreme (5th generation).
I have a E4200 router. I do not think that will fix the issue for you after a day or so. The problem with AppleTV 2/3 not being able to connect to the computer started with either the new Apple TV sw or the iTunes update. Works fine for a day or so, the stops connecting. Restarting iTunes allows them to connect again.
I'm at 48 hours + with the E4200 with no drop outs. The ATV has been paused in the middle of a movie and then went to sleep and woke back up at the same spot. Been to sleep and woke back up multiple times without having to reconnect Home Sharing. Not once. *Knock on wood* I'm good to go. With my DLink DIR-655 I had a drop out about every 10 mins ever since the last iOS/iTunes update.
Thanks for your reply SoundForSound. If I have to restart my iTunes each day or each two days, it's even better than each 5 minutes. It's less frustrating. I will be more able to wait the Apple fix...
I had this frustrating issue but something I have done seems to have resolved it. I wish I could isolate exactly where the issue might be but now that everything is working I've been instructed to not break it again. I made a number of changes at the same time (which in hindsight I shouldn't have done as it might help point the finger more clearly at the exact issue).
I had the issue on my ATV2 and then it seems to have been fixed (over a week no disconnects) and I just recently received my ATV3. No disconnects yet and it has been a few days.
I'll highlight some of the things I did:
1) Uninstalled and then reinstalled Bonjour + iTunes with computer restarts after uninstall and reinstall.
2) Reset ATV2 (I just plugged ATV3 in and it worked out of the box no problem)
3) Restarted my Airport Extreme (4th gen) multiple times
4) Unplugged my Airport Express which I was using as a range extender (I really didn't need it in this capacity anyway)
5) On my airport exteme I was using Google for IPv6 DNS Servers... I deleted these settings.
One or a combination of some of these things made the difference for me. I made no other changes but both I and my wife were having issues homesharing (two different iTunes accounts). I should mention that we were able to play TV shows from our computers (Win 7 64bit) to the Apple TV but we could not initiate watching a TV show stored on our computer from the Apple TV without it dropping within 5 mins or so.
One of the changes I listed above (or a combinations of) worked the magic and now both of our computers are homesharing without a problem.
As has been mentioned a few times if you are having an issue please leave feedback for Apple.

I hope that helps someone.
SOLVED MY ISSUES.
THANKS!!!
Im running AppleTV2 with iTunes on a Windows 7 PC with a Cisco WRVS440N. All connections are hardwired.
Thanks ChriseMo.
How can I stop my audio from cutting out its almost lagging but Internet is fine and hardwired in visuals are fine but audio keeps skipping
@spma3, Well, I'm sorry to report that my connection had dropped out once again this morning when I woke up to check it. I had followed all of your steps, but no luck for me. Now all I can do is hope that Apple discovers and fixes this bug as soon as possible.
Does Apple Corp monitor this forum? Do they ever post any comments or suggestions? (Sorry, I'm new here... ). Since this issue appears to be at least a year old, does anyone have ANY indication that Apple Corp even intends to solve this prob?
Is our only recourse to individually call up Apple tech support (is there such a thing?) and as individuals ask them for information on when and if this issue will be solved? Is there any way we can act in concert to push for a fix which obviously affects a LOT of people, of an feature which is promoted in their sales literature, and which obviously does not work.

I had this issue to and did the folowing 2 steps to solve that problem.
1) Make sure your firewall allows incoming traffic on tcp port 49152
2) Deaktivate the deep Standby (Sleep) Mode in ATV. By default this is turned on.
Knock on wood. Until now no problems anymore...
My ATV (2nd Gen) was rock solid forever until drop outs would occur every ten minutes.
I have a linksys w54tg (something or other, it's so old I can't see the name for the dust😁
(The blue one)
So I moved the modem literally one foot to get to the wiring in prep to replace it.
It hasn't dropped since.
(I've run it all morning)
From Apple Weenus to Apple Genius in one easy step.
