Kernel Panic every 20min

Hi All, i have a brand new 2.3ghz MBP 10.6.6

I get a kernel panic about 10 times a day ! I have owned this mac for 3 days now. I save my reports after evrey boot. they all have the same message.

Can any one explain this line in the panic report com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.10)@0xffffff7f80b6e000->0xffffff7f80b87fff

The panic happens when i'm using the internet/safari. My connection is via my iPhone (teathering).

No idea how to read panic logs but viewing Flash content in Safari has been linked to kernel panics. Also, panics are often related to have things plugged in to your Mac. Possibly the iPhone is causing this? Do you have anything else connected to the Mac?

AFAIK, that first line shows that the networking is causing the problem. So, have you tried to get online with a DSL, cable, or other connection (other than with your iPhone)? I'm not an expert on this, but it would seem to me that the connection and speed from/through a phone would result in problems of data transfer to a computer. See this:

I would not expect such a connection to be good for more than occasional emails and/or a bit of web surfing. But, as I said, I'm not an expert.

You're probably looking at a hardware failure. If you're within easy reach of an Apple retail store, take it there and let them figure it out. If not, call Apple tech support.

I've just used my iphone 4 as a "hotspot" for the first time (to deal with a poor signal problem).
5x kernel panics in 30 minutes - apparently the same as yours.

Macbook Pro 15" 2.3 2011

I have already reported several freezes with this machine - the forums are filling up with tales of similar problems, many apparently related to graphics, but more generally a repeated issue with severe and sudden hardware lock ups.

Personally, I've also had Skype 5.x cause 3 kernel panics
This problem today with iPhone tethering (apparently) - using USB not bluetooth.
2x freezes when playing Bioshock and switching from the game to Finder (using Apple & Tab)

And 3x complete (no mouse movement, nothing) freezes - at least one of these, using Handbrake to encode video.

There is something SERIOUSLY amiss.

I had several major problems with Skype 5; I contacted them and they sent me a link to their older versions. As soon as I got rid of the latest and reinstalled the 2.8.x.x, things returned to normal. I'd recommend doing that... here is their link:

I'm certainly no expert re. hotspots, but it just seems logical that this type of signal may not be strong enough to transmit large files.

You should contact AppleCare since it is so new and has a problem.
However, I have seen a few things around the internet that may indicate there is a problem with the tethering. The fact that the panic implicates the networking kext may be indicative of the same problem.

If there is a problem, AppleCare may want to know about it. However, don't expect the first-tier support to know anything about it. It is likely too new to have a lot of knowledge about the problem.

If you can, try connecting another way (airport, ethernet) and make sure you don't get any panics. If you do, it could be a hardware problem.

I have recently purchased a new broadband modem so i don't need to tether my iPhone to my MBP. I did call Apple and they are happy to exchange my mac for a new one but this will mean 2 week without my MAC ;-(

If you can confirm it is an issue with tethering, then I would agree to holding onto the Mac as a new one likely won't change a thing.

So, keep an eye on it and if you don't get any more kernel panics with tethering off, then I'd have to agree with your decision.

It has started happening again. I purchased a new Modem from Telstra and have been using it for a week with no problems until today.

You could try that, but it may not help. For one thing, many people have reported kernel panics while tethered to an iPhone since the update, so there may be an OS bug. For another, your problem seems to lie with the Sierra software, at least some of the time.
