MLB TV Picture Quality

After yesterday's announcement, I excitedly ordered MLB.TV to watch on my AppleTV 2nd Gen.

Picture quality was a disappointment. Watched 2 spring training games. Detail was very poor, even on a game that was widescreen (presumably HD?). Motion is very stuttery, as if the frame rate is low.

My downstream bandwidth exceeds 17Mbps, and Netflix and Apple rentals work fine.

Anyone else tried it yet?

BTW: MLB.TV says it can be cancelled "at any time", but the fine print says you can only get a refund in the first 5 days!

The reason the quality of the picture is not comparable to Sat or cable is that those services stream those games with a bitrate ranges from 16-91mpbs/second. MLBTV maximum bitrate which is stated on their website is 3mpbs/second. With those low bit rates you will see a highly compressed signal. I am having similiar video and audio issue with choppy audio and video. This atop the compression artifacts that jump at you with any fast motion. These streams have 5 to 6 times the compression as a sat or cable HD feed. **** a standard dvd has a bit rate of 6-8mpbs. Have called MLBTV and the level 2 tech agreed and told me that the current bit rates were designed for computer streaming and not large screen HDTV sets. Received a email from MLBTV stating they are currently working on raising bit rates for streaming devices. I would encourage everyone who is not happy with the servicce to call MLBTV and complain about the low bit rates. State my numbers to them. I have called several times and no tech has argued that I was wrong. They all agreed and apologized. I can tell you that the audio and video choppyness that I am experiencing is a MLBTV app PS3 issue. I can stream MLBTV through Playon and the stream is clean. Only 480p and still full of compression artifacts but no audio or video stuttering.

i have both a roku (last years additon) and apple tv2. the picture quality of mlb games on the roku is infinitely better than the apple tv.

I cannot figure out why since they both share the same internet connection (airport extreme). The picture on the roku is pretty close to HD quality, even when it is receiving broadcast via wif (and this is on a 50" lcd tv). The apple tv is closer to 72p resolution. Is it possible mlb was only meant to watched on an ipod mini?

so far, i can make these assumptions:
1) The problem is not with the MLB servers, otherwise the roku would have the same problems.
2) It is not with the internet connection either, they both use the same apple router.

does apple have any suggestions? Is is possible that I have my settings on the apple tv2 set incorrectly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Came to this site to see if anyone else has been having problems with ATV2 and MLB. After blaming everybody but ATV I finally decided to see how the game was on my iMac and discovered that I get great HD reception on my iMac and the problem is the ATV2. I have run it WiFi and ethernet and there is no difference in the ATV performance. The picture will pixelate, freeze, and sometimes completely jump out of MLB but the reception on the iMac is rock solid. I've removed everything but the ATV and the ATV still messes up. Waiting for the update. The quality of MLB on ATV ranges from mildly annoying to completely unwatchable. By that I mean picture freezes up about every 30 seconds. It's like the ATV is performing some other operation in the background and it's just not compatible with ATV. Apple please fix this.

I think the drop off in coments is due to people simply giving up and accepting the fact that MLB.TV on Apple TV is terrible. There has been no improvement for me. Watched a game last night that was mostly pixelated, constantly stalled, and frequently crashed back out to the Apple TV main screen. I'm personally looking for a used Mac Mini since MLB.TV plays fine on my MacBook Pro and iMac, neither of which I want to connect to my TV though.

@ Tofupants: As you have read the beginning of this thread, you noted that I and others were complained about the same lousy reception problems you have with MLB on ATV. Eventaully, the problems were remedy (and the complaints seem to disappear. Now, it seems that the problems have recurred but only for some, who seem to be new subscribers to the MLB - and perhaps new ATV users. So, perhaps, the problem is related to one initiating the the MLB subscription on ATV?

I know the frustration of freezing and pixilating, but they (Thankfully) have not returned since the start of last season. Indeed, I remarked last evening on fine the streaming.

I have not any idea whether this will help you: Some where along the frutration way, Apple Care suggested rebooting the ATV/TV connection by unplugging the HDMI cable - pausing for a time - and then repluging it.

While I have MLB available via my ATV2, I probably watch MLB over 50% of my viewing time on my computer via MLB.com. Lately I've noticed that my internet streaming is getting slower and slower. Today I went into Utilities/Airport Utility and chenged my home wireless from 2 Ghz to 5 Ghz because of possible interference with my BT mouse.

While it's too soon to say definitely, the change appears to have enhansed my streaming performance a lot.

I just posted something similar. For me it seems to have only gotten horrible in the last week or so (I was thinking it was somehow related to the Apple TV update but maybe I wasn't watching enough last week via Apple TV to catch when it started accurately). At any rate, it is unbelievable. In the past it would usually "work itself out" after a minute or two and then remain relatively stable. Now it starts off poor and only gets worse. I am also just watching via the iPad and Airplay. It looks fine and works but it does **** me off that I have to do that. What is the point of the service if it doesn't work? MLB does not seem interested and Apple certainly doesn't pipe in on these threads typically so they can't be too concerned either. Very annoying.

How does the quality compare to the typical cable company's baseball package like Extra Innings?

On my cable system, (Cox) MLB Extra Innings is mostly standard def feeds, with only 1 game a day in hi def. However, the standard def feeds suffer no motion/stuttering issues.

The SD spring training games via AppleTV were very poor quality compared to what you would see on MLB Extra innings. I personally also found the HD games unwatchable, due to the very high compression/poor framerate.

The strobing did not bother all members of my family, though they could see it when I pointed it out.

MLB Support has indicated that quality will be better in regular season (that's today!) but I have not gotten a chance to watch something yet.

It also depends on the what circuitry you have in the apple tv to handle the video stream. Both of my computers have very good video cards which help with error correction. Also the next def plugin that you download also helps with cleaning up the signal. Unfortunately my PS3 does not such things. My XBOX 360 has silverlight installed and better video cards so the PQ on Netflix looks better then the PS3. I am not sure what the Apple TV has that can do the error correction. It is a MLBTV issue. They are the ones to call but it is a frustrating process and you have to make a lot of noise. They will try to turn it on you and you system and internet connection. Fortunately I have a premium download speeds so the bandwith test shut them up quickly. Good luck but call them and complain!

on Comcast here. Speedtestnet gives me 29.15 Mbps down and 4.96Mbps up in terms of speed...just glad to know other people have the same issue..I definitely think it's relating to the way AppleTV is buffering the MLB stream...if you watch anything on Netflix or Itunes movies or tv shows, you can see there is always a nice size buffer there...but with MLB it's screwed up and buffer is empty when the bar flashes intermittently on the bottom of the screen...tried a RESTORE of Appletv..made no difference whatsoever.

MLB.tv quality with my ATV2 is awful. Pixelated image and freezing nonstop. I use a Samsung TV with the built in app in another room and quality is great so it's not my internet connection. Streaming a YouTube video is also very slow with the Apple TV as well. I haven't tried an online rental yet but so far I am pretty disappointed. If quality and speed doesn't improve before my 30 day return window is up I'll be taking it back for a refund. I use a lot of Apple devices and this is the first one that has let me down.

After a complete restore of the Apple TV there's been no improvement.

An interesting comparison is to watch the NBA Game Highlights and then compare those to the MLB Game Recaps. The NBA content looks amazing. MLB is complete crap. This would indicate there's something fundamentally different about the stream MLB is sending to the ATV vs. the stream that the NBA is using.

Anyway... Still disappointed.

Last year I watched MLB.tv on my Roku. The picture quality was great but the hardware was crap--kept freezing, even after I replaced it through warranty. This year was the same problem.

Now, I have an Apple TV. It's far more reliable/less buggy, but the picture quality is rarely HD. Despite the bugs on my Roku, when the picture comes in it does come in with fantastic quality.

I guess I can't really have it both ways, unless I want to hook up my laptop to the screen. But, I don't like tying up my computer just to watch the game. That's what I got the box for!

Very disappointed so far.

Unforuately quailty isnt great with MLB on the appleTV(2). I have had it over a year now and its still disappointing especially now that i own a iPad(3) and MLB at Bat is almost perfect on it. Its not unwatchable or anything but u can definately tell that your not watching your normal HDTV etc (which is the opposite on the iPad!) Ive never been able to watch for long without some kind of a "glitch."

Guess this leads me to believe that in fact it is the appletv that is the problem. Its still quite choppy and if you need to pause or rewind it usually stalls and thats frustrating. I dont know why you cant get true live DVR controls either but guess thats a solution that I wouldnt know how to go about fixing. And why is it so clumsy to go from one game to another (on the ipad its a breeze).

Curious if anyone that has the newest appleTV version 3 is having better results? I also hate the fact that if I want to "click" over to check say espn on my dierctv etc the apple tv will not just keep playing the game like it disconnects or something just because Ive switched over but thats probably for another thread. If anyone knows a solution to this please advise.
