What are some of the ways to plug a guitar into the iPad version of Garage Band? Will the iRig work? Does Apple sell a device to do this?

MacBook Pro 15", Mac OS X (10.6.6), Using Lion preview (10.7)

I bought a Griffin GuitarConnect cable a while back to goof around with the other guitar amp apps. It works fine with GarageBand on iPad. That said, I'm sure the Apogee dock connector device is much higher quality.

But if you're just looking to noodle around and have fun, the GuitarConnect cable will do the trick. It's a lot cheaper 🙂

Occasionally I find the monitoring is not working, and need to switch to another instrument and switch back to the guitar amp, but not sure if that is the cable or the app.

So the Griffin Guitar Connect cable is just a 1/4" to 1/8" shielded cable, right? Well I tried two different ones last night to connect to the iPad through the headphone out and GB seemed to detect that I plugged something in, but still only recorded through the built-in mic. It took no signal from the cable. Is this a settings issue? Or will a regular 1/4 inch phone plug to mini-plug just not work?

I used a M-Audio Fastrack MKI with the camera kit connection and a powered usb hub, this works fine for me and allow me to connect my guitar to the Garageband. The two points you need to take into account is that external usb interfaces normally need a usb powered hub to connect to the ipad cause high power consumption and also that the OS recognizes it (mine is 4.2.1). Also need to know that inside garage band my interface send the guitar mono channel on the right side not in left (default channel). Also enable monitor to hear yourself before recording.

Although I already have a Peavey AmpKit Link, I'd like to try hooking my M-Audio FastTrack USB through a powered USB hub into my iPad via the dock connector. Do you still need the camera connection kit as well, or can you plug a 30-pin to USB cable from the hub to the iPad? If I need to add too many adapters into the cable chain, it would be simpler (and possibly cheaper) to just wait for the new Apogee Jam interface to come out.

I did solve the guitar channel showing up on the non-default channel (at least on the Mac version) with an XLR to TLS cable plugged into the mic input on the FastTrack: <http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9048501#9048501>

It does look cool. I'm just waiting for some reviews from others to see if it's worth it. My only issue would be at what point have I completely replaced my MBP? I'd love for the iPad to be my music solution but not sure if it can really take on all the tasks? With a tool like the one you link it would be nice to run multiple apps all talking via this dock, not sure if this can be pulled off or not?

I don't think it would ever actually replace my IMac or MBP, but more likely give me another opportunity for creation. I'm truly an American, in other words Lazy. Hee hee. But I am. My end result in output is logic studio, but by the time I have my studio up and running, I may have lost my inspiration, so it's quicker to open up GarageBand and record my inspiration, and eventually upload to Logic Studio to tweak, add better midi implementation, and finalize. So having GarageBand on iPad is a further implementation of my laziness. Using my iPad/GarageBand let's me record those ideas quicker and wherever I may be, then as before, upload thru iMac GarageBand, to Logic. If GarageBand makes to iPhone,....... Dang I'm lazy.
