If you're referring to a mono 1/8" to 1/4" cable, it won't work. The jack on the iPad is set up for stereo headsets (w/microphone). The mono plug is Tip & Sleeve (TS), the tip being the signal and the sleeve being the ground. Stereo headphones have a Tip, Ring, & Sleeve (TRS) plug; Left-Right-Ground. The iPad has a Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve jack, meaning that the signal from those is: Left-Right-INPUT-and ground.
I just received my Apogee Jam this morning. Wow, it is like night and day when compared with the Griffin guitar connect. I own several Apogee interfaces for Mac so I expected it to be wonderful, but was concerned about a $5.00 Application. The guitar is sooo pristine.
I suggest that if you care about the quality of your recordings, and you are working with GarageBand on iPad, this is the interface to use. Bonus is that when you upload to a Mac this interface works on that platform as well.
I concur!! Received mine today as well and the guitar tones are fantastic running through the Jam. I was using an Ampkit Link previous which had a ton of hiss and poor sound quality. The Jam sounds pretty much perfect. Loving this thing! Now I can finally use GB properly. 🙂
I haven't but if its not using the digital input on the iOS devices, its not worth a fraction of the price. The analog inputs are not optimized for guitar and will always produce sub-optimal results. JAM will produce professional results every time. Perhaps that's not that important to you, but it will make GarageBand's guitar models work better than the noisy analog devices.
Sorry for confusion... I was talking about "Behringer UCG102 Guitar-to-USB Interface". It works perfect on ipad2. I can input vuotar sig al and monitor output with headphones connected to the device output not iPad output. Sound is better then irig. In Italy Jam stil not available so no comparison to' me
@NatSci - Did you just plug the USB Chord from the Fender Mustang straight into the CCK into the iPad? I just got my CCK today, and when I tried it, I got a message saying this device not supported. After that, the only input I got was from the external mic.
I've been trying all day to get this to work, and I'm having no luck. I am plugging direct into my Fender Mustang amp, using the USB out plug directly into the CCK. The only sounds I'm getting are tons of static and faint guitar sounds which are obviously being picked up by the external mic.
I have successfully been able to plug a UBS mic into a powered USB hub an into the CCK, and Garageband is picking up the mic in the USB port, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the CCK itself.
Is there a setting that I am missing in the Guitar Amp instrument that switches over to the USB input, or should the input be detected automatically? Thanks.
Hi, Sorry for my delay in getting back to you. Here's how I do it.
1) Plug everything in first -- usb from Mustang into camera adaptor into iPad -- leaving your Mustang amp OFF. (I have a Mustang II, but I wouldn't expect that the model would make a difference.)
2) Open new song in GB on iPad.
3) Choose "Guitar amp" in GB, and choose an amp (which you can change later).
4) Then turn on your Mustang Amp. (Best to turn the volume all the way down on the Mustang.) (You should now be getting a signal.)
5) In iPad, press the button for the monitor (picture of guitar cord jack, top left).
6) Using virtual slider turn monitor on.
This should do it.
Then you can change sounds on both your amp and your iPad, lots of choices!
(When I turned the amp on in advance of connecting everything, I had the same problem you had. So I figure the key is to turn amp on *only after everything is connected and song is open*.)
@NatSci - Strange, but I still get nothing. All I'm getting is the external mic.
I've never plugged the Mustang into a PC to this point. Is there a driver or something that needs to be downloaded in order for the Mustang to work with the iPad?
At this point, I'm about ready to just buy the Apogee Jam and be done with it.
Hi, While the steps I noted earlier don't involve any PC or Mac, I do recall getting a firmware update when I bought my Mustang Amp and hooked it up. It was really easy. Just load the Fender Fuse software in the PC or Mac then plug the usb in etc (might need to register or something, don't recall) but then it'll tell you if a firmware update is available, follow instructions from there. It's all pretty easy. Perhaps that firmware makes a difference in this context, but I'm not sure.
The Apogee Jam does look pretty cool, and I hear it works well. (Of course, it's exactly the same price as a Fender Mustang I amp, which is a full-on guitar amp, and a rockin one at that!) Good luck, whatever you do. Cheers!
@NatSci - No dice. Did the firmware & software update on the Fender Mustang, plugged everything in in the order you've detailed, and my iPad/GarageBand is still not picking up the guitar as an input. At this point, I really don't know what else to do. I'll try returning the CCK and exchanging it for a new one, but I have my doubts that the CCK is the culprit.
@NatSci - I am embarrassed to say that I have figured out my problem - reboot the iPad. Once I did that, everything worked perfectly.
Which amp setting are you using on the Fender Mustang to get a "clean" sound out of the amp? Do you use a preset, or did you customize one? I imagine that you could go into the Fender Fuse software and easily create a clean sound? I haven't actually fiddled with the Fuse software at all to this point, so I'm just guessing.
