Booting from 64-Bit Kernel to Solve "Service Battery" Issue

Hey everyone!

After scouring the Net for the last 7 hours and not finding any solution at all to the issue I'm having, I need your help!

I bought my MacBook Pro back in early '09 from a private third-party but I believe it is a late 2007 model--Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1.

Like many other users who upgraded to Snow Leopard, my battery, which had no issues prior to the upgrade, is now showing symptoms of weakening at a quite rapid pace! I read here ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2139186&start=60&tstart=6) that by booting using the 64-bit kernel it will solve all "Service Battery" issues.

My question is how do I boot into 64-bit mode? I've tried the main method by holding the 6+4 keys down at startup until the Apple logo ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773) but every time I still end up in 32-bit mode. By all accounts my machine does have the necessary hardware to boot into 64-bit mode (e.g. 4GB RAM, EFI64 hardware, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) but nothing is working.

Does anybody know why this is or what other methods exist to boot a MacBookPro3,1 into 64-bit mode?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
