"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

And i called up APPLE and they ask me to use the 6-steps uninstall mathod but i couldnt find any apple software update to uninstall so i ignore. and i tried downloading again and again but it stil doesnt works.

Can someone guide me how to install itunes?

Thank you so much

It's very odd because from what you wrote, the permissions look correct. You only see if permissions are inherited if click on the advanced button. But if you changed the permissions the would no longer be inherited.
If you click on advanced on the security tab and look at Administrators, SYSTEM and Trusted Installed, do the all have full control ticked?

It is possible that something strange has happened with your account, Could you create a new administrator account and see if things work better from there.
There are instructions for creating an administrator account in this article:

I have to go now and I will not be back until tomorrow.

If anyone else wants to carry on with this, please feel free to take over.

I am receiving a similar error message when trying to load itunes on to my laptop (Dell Studio 17-Windows 7)

The error message is "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to rectify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package"

I followed your previous advise about searching for all the programs, and I dont have any of them on this computer..

Can you please help 🙂

i tried again and the same thing keeps happening.

anyone know how to help?

I too have this problem on an Acer laptop running Windows Vista Home 32 bit.

As an earlier response suggested, I manually removed each iTunes component. Interestingly the Qucktime folder was left behind, which I tried to delete manually, but had an access denied errpr, so then had to alter the folder permissions to actually delete the thing.

So I extracted the individual programs from the itunessetup file and set about installing each program in order.

Was able to install each item until Apple Software Update. This failed with the error 'There is a problem with this Windows installer package'.

Interestingly if I then tried to install the Quicktime followed by the itunes packages, they both get the same failure message, althought oddly the itunes package completes and puts icons for itunes and quicktime on my desk top. Trying to click on these fails - and on checking this seems to be because the itunes and quicktime folders give access denied error messages. So a permissions issue remains - not sure if this is a left over from the failed installs.

Well after hours of going round in circles I think the problem is solved, but what a nightmare.

I eventually found this thread http://www.vistax64.com/software/273003-yet-another-quicktime-itunes-windows-ins taller-package-problem-10.html which as I read it, started to ring bells. My problems all seemed to be related to permissions under Vista on the various folders and files that the install created, even when I was installing as an administrator.

Somebody has pointed out that the combo of iTunes, Vista and Acer seem to be the unholy trinity here, which is exactly the combo I have.

Anyway it still feels like a horrible cludge, having to manually mess around with folder security.

No help from Apple or MS or Acer.

Hello everybody!! I was with the same problem and actually the focus of the problem is the Apple Software Update. Then I'll say what you have to do:

1- Download the program Revo Uninstaller

2- Inside the program Revo Uninstaller , search for the Apple Software Update, double click it and REPAIR it.

3- Try to install the itunes file again.

So that's it, you're free to go and be very happy 🙂.

My situation:

- get error when updating iTunes from 1041 to 1050 or above: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

My system: XP SP3 with all latest updates.

Found out that the 1051 update fixes a major intrusion possibility during the update process, so I want to get iTunes upgraded to 1051.

Did more research and the following worked (not known if all steps outlined were necessary) (I do not guarantee success nor any more issues as a result):

- ran: MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall.exe (did JUST the patch option).

- ran: Windows Installation Removal Tool.exe (uninstalled JUST the iTunes program installer folder) (this does not remove the actual program).

- removed all apple software update registry entries.

- removed: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple\Installer Cache\(JUST the software updatefolders) (hidden folder).

- removed: C:\Documents and Settings\current user\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\(JUST the software update folders) (hidden folder).

- DID NOT need to restart

- downloaded latest iTunes update (1051)

- opened using WinRAR

- extracted all files

- ran JUST the apple software update MSI

- it succeeded

- ran JUST the iTunes MSI

- it succeeded

- normally I then uninstall the apple software update program, but DID NOT this time

- DID NOT need to restart

Hope it works for you.

carystevens,

I'm glad something worked for you, but please don't refer to any of the suggestions as crap. Each of the people laying out suggestions worked hard on documenting as a form of help for those such as you. As for my suggestion specifically, the fix that worked for you did not work for me or many others. The only thing that worked for me was what I personally laid out. I took about one hour of my time to lay out my fix for others, because I tried all other's suggestions and many others not noted here, for at least one month as I found time. I finally figured out what worked for me and wanted to help.
