Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

According to this report, the light leaking has been attributed to defects in the LCDs produced by LG:

Apparently the ones produced by Samsung did not have this problem, and the LG problem has been fixed and they have resumed shipping.

Is there a way of determining which manufacturer's display you have (preferably before taking the iPad 2 home)?

Thanks,

doug

I can't beleive that this issue is still going on! I bought my 4th one yesterday having refunded the last 3. 2 from an apple store and 1 online - all of which had this issue. I keep getting told that apple are aware and it should be cleared up in the next batch - its now 2 months since it was released !!!

I need some advise on this. From what I am reading from other posts is the only way it to get a 100% bleed free screen is to get a "Brown Box" replacement from the store - do you agree ?

Maybe its the model I am buying. Is there any one else who has a 100% leak free screen black 32gb 3G model?

Yep, it is still going on I'm afraid... I have returned/refunded 4 iPads 2 so far and for a while (today) was considering to purchase one from online store just hoping that the issue will be fixed.

I didn't... and I am so glad and happy that I did not sell my trusty, perfect in every way iPad 64 GB 3G MK1 🙂

Judging by all these posts, getting perfect iPad 2 is still like a lottery and honestly I have no time or patience for that anymore.

BTW; Also please be aware that because of the design of the new ipad 2, there is also big risk of screen separating - fault present on 2 out of my 4 returns 😟

I will wait for iPad 3, hoping that it will be perfect that time round... 😉

Not long to go now...

Hey guys,

So I went to Sheffield (UK) last night to see the Genius Bar with my black 16gb wifi ipad2 with the screen leak! I had taken some pics on my digi camera to show them as I knew they would not be able to see the problem in store... got there, told the guy I had a light leak and without any hesitation or questions he said its a known problem and would sort a replacement out!

After signing some papers and a friendly chat about how I was finding it he opened a draw and pulled out a "brown box" with an ipad2 in. I asked if he could be 100% sure this one would not have the issue as I didnt want to drive home only to come back with it the next day! He said all refusbishments are clear of faults and that all new ipads2 should be OK. He went on to explain it was only a couple of effected batches and the problems should now be sorted.... I still insisted he went out back into a dark room to test it for me, which he did... he also said Apple are aware of the problem and MOST apple stores have sufficient "ipad2 brown box replacements" to meet customer complaint demand..... i saw inside his cupboard! They had loads! At least 10 of each type of ipad2!!!!

Anyway got home, and I can confirm it is perfect! Not a single problem! Anyway, moral of the story.... take it back to apple, get it replaced and let the guy test it BEFORE you leave (and get his name!) at least if you get home and the fault is still there you can kick off a bit at them!!!

Big thanks to Apple for sorting (mine at least!) this out :-)

@simon5080 - good luck mate! It is a known issue and they are just swapping them out, and like I said most of the large apple stores have plenty of replacement stock.... interestingly enough, the Genius at Sheffield said we've had a "few" back but not as many as other stores.... maybe us guys aren't bothered about screen leak as much!!

@atlatnesiti - only saying what I've been told by Apple! :-) a "small batch" might still be 500,000 units! Thing is, its a known issue so just take the thing back and ask them to check it out before you leave the store!

Dont stress about this guys, just take it to your nearest store (if you live close that is!) and get it swapped out.... id be careful about buying retail and sending it back as there is no way of knowing if your getting an "old" bad batch unit! My first ipad2 was bought last week online and had the problem!

Good luck everyone!

Just an update from my trip to the apple store - The apple genius agreed it has the issue and was surprised this is still going on. They had no replacements for my model so have ordered me one and was told 3 - 5 days, they will call me to let me know its in.

I think for my sanity this has to be the last attempt at this - fingers crossed. I will post an update when I get the replacement.

went to apple store Glasgow today, they had replacements for all models, got my white 32gb 3g swapped over for a brown boxer and the screen is pretty much perfect!!! little scatch on the back but after 5 ipad 2s im pretty happy to be watching movies and playing games in the evenings without an added light show going on around the edges of the screen, brown box came with older version software 4.3.

@biscuitdunker.... that is REALLY strange my experiance was identical! Apple Store in Sheffield had tons of replacements (black 16gb wifi...), screen is perfect accept I had a small mark on the back, I'm totally not bothered about it because a) it is super tiny and b) I have the Incipio Feather case on the back to protect it anyway..... strange how they both had this (was yours near the bottom just under the plastic flap? at first i thought it was glue....)

Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?
