Significant light leakage, few light botches on sides/corners - defective?

Actually I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but thought I'd share my experience here. Very disappointing, but certainly completely usable until I can exchange.

Hoping it's one of those strange manufacturing things where it "needs to settle," but I doubt it.

Note that I have an iPad 1 also, and it definitely doesn't have this problem.

Even if you get very minimal amount light bleed you still have to deal with possible pixel failure. The problem with LCDs is that the pixels do fail as time goes on. You wind up getting several dead pixels. Luckily, I have no dead pixels right now, but I fear I may get a few later down the road.

There is also problem with motion with these displays. The response time is still slow compare to the plasma displays. On my plasma display, with the right software I can play 30 fps video files that play "like" 60~ 100 fps. It is that ultra smooth, no frame drop what-so-ever, AND there is no motion blur. It is very authentic. Whereas the iPad 2 can't do any of these. I must have spent good $1300 on Apple items (iPod Touch 4 and iPad 2 64GB Wifi and some accessories) so far. Overall I feel it's not worth all this money. If some witch told me what was going to happen in advance I would have not purchased any of it and save up some money and get another plasma display..

Rule Number 1: Avoid buying LCD, anything LCD.

Rule Number 2: Boycott purchasing LG products.

Rule Number 3: Boycott anything assembled in China. I would trust ones made in Japan. The Japanese build products with passion, they are not just after the money... this is why they succeeded.

I thought LG copped to the mistake and said they fixed the problem with their screens...

Maybe all the problems people are reporting is from old stock still?

Or is this still going on even with newly created ipad 2's?

Either way I have given up on iPad 2...

You should not have to go through 4-5 defective swaps just to get a decent one that you're happy with....that goes for any product or purchase.

I'm doing just fine with my iPad 1 anyways -- been going over 1 year now -- no bleeding, perfect display, and runs the same apps 🙂 I was all set to upgrade back when it launched, but now months later and the issue is still not resolved -- this is unacceptable, especially for a company like Apple.

Regardless -- maybe the new mac airs will be good 🙂 I'm hoping for sandy bridge and thunderbolt with a nice SSD 🙂

I went through the same thing when buying an LCD TV. ..I went through 3 brands before I basically resigned myself to the fact that this is the state-of-the-art of LCD, so I bought a Plasma TV.

Light leakage is inherent in all LCD screens, particularly those produced to meet a reasonable pricepoint.. ..It's not just Apple. I would suggest trying not to obsess on this one flaw and start enjoying your iPad for what it is and does well.

Anyone recall Nathaniel Hawthorne's short-story "The Birth-Mark"? ..I'm sometimes reminded of this short story when I visit userforums (Apple and others).

Just received my 32gig WIFI. Ordered online, shipped directly from Shenzhen to Canada. I totally thought this issue would've been resolved by now -- boy was I wrong. The defective screens are still being used in the assembly process. I've got noticable light leaks on the left side of my screen (when holding it vertical).

The Apple support rep I got was cagey - while she said that I should be able to exchange my iPad 2 until I get one that works, she had no info on when the screen issue would be resolved. So it's basically a crapshoot of returns - unless I just hold off for a few more months until the issue seems to be resolved.

Anybody have any clue when the issue will be resolved? Anyone recently buy an iPad 2 with the same issues?

Yet another update,

my second Ipad I got from the ARS has had a dead pixle since day one and now it is gettin worse (bigger) and more ovious on more colors.

Looks like ill be returning this one as well.

As for LCD light bleed I do belive that they do sometimes have some but these displays have far more than "normal". My Sony bravia LCD TV has some from one corner but can only be seen at night on a black screen. My Nikon D3100 has very little as well but neither have bleed as signficant as my first Ipad. The bleed they ahve compare to my second IPad.

I'm no Apple fanboy (as I've had my share of gripes about both Apple hardware and software over the years) but I just can't get excited about this so-called defect. ..This is a $500 multi-functional device, it is not a $20,000 surgical instrument. ..The light leakage, though apparent when you look for it, does not diminish my enjoyment one iota. And I have a hard time understanding how it would for anyone else. Personally, I'm okay with Apple back-burnering this issue. ..It's simply not that big a deal.

Well, realistically speaking it will cost more than $500. Not to mention, that is with lowest storage capacity. A 64GB with just Wifi costs $700 alone. Throw in the accelesories and stuff and you are easily at over $800. A lot of people end up spending nearly $1000 for an iPad product.

You look at the front side of the iPad. What do you see mostly??.. It's the SCREEN. It's meant to provide VIDEO. And it's supposed to display video without problems. Light bleeding is a problem. You don't have to look for it to find one. Soon or later the user will notice white light blooming on parts of the screen when the video is displaying dark scenes. Anyone will notice it and wonder what that is. It will be bothersome.

To me, iPad 2 64GB isn't worth $700. I don't mind paying $70 for one.

Like I said earlier, LCD is an inferior tech.

Or are these tablet device meant to be used to view videos with bright scenes??.. like outdoor with sunlight? Here are the following tips to "hide" the problem:

- ONLY view videos with bright scenes, no nights scenes, no scenes with shadows, no black bars.. ha ha

- Take the iPad outside in the bright sun light and watch videos.

- For indoor use, sit right between the lamps turned on.

That would be so ridiculous.

Got the same problem and a dead pixel. Took it back and they were very nice about it and ordered a new one for me. We will see if the new ones is just as bad. I am fearing the new one will be worse.. My light bleeding wasn't that bad but the dead pixel convinced me to return it.

And on a side note...everyone that keeps bad mouthing the LCD displays here's some news the iPad 2's have an LED display not LCD...

I know Apple call their device LED-IPS for the screen. Isn't LED based on the LCD platform? no? They both share similar disadvantages also. I believe LCD = LED = LED IPS same thing ha ha... Plasma is in completely different technology altogether....

I bet that these pictures don't show the problem 100%. The light bleeds generally show more in real life. But of course, we thank you for posting these pictures. Much appreciated. More pics, the better.

I forgot to add one more tip.. actually I mentioned this a while back but I'll say it again. Another way to reduce / hide minor light bleeding / blotches is to lower the brightness to about 20% or less. If you lower it to 0% the light blotches may go away completely. Can you see anything though? ha ha This is ridiculous. 🙂

My suggestion to all you potential customers, unless you like light blotches, do not buy any Apple iPad or any other LCD based tablets from other manufacturer.... You are taking a great risk. And don't go try exchanging for another one as you will like get one that is worse. The chance of getting a "perfect" light bleed-free dead pixel-free will be at 0%.

I've got my iPad 2 few days ago. OMG!!! It's worse. The engraving is wrong typing. The screen has a lot of light leaking. For the bad thing is having some scratch on the back. It doesn't look very new. I feel like someone used it before and return it because of light leaking problem. Apple company might repack it and sell it again. I guess. I was so disappointed. I returned it. It's not the first time that I return iPad 2. Should I try to order online again or give up with it?
