Using iPad2, I purchased the iMovie app, and when I take my home movies in .mov form and import them from iTunes to the iPad, iMovies does not see any videos. Surely this app will work with existing home videos and not just videos shot wight the iPad. If the was the case I never would have bought the app in the first place, I wanted to be able to edit my family vacation videos shot with a local hd cam directly on my iPad.
This is the first time I buy an Apple product...just bought and Ipad2 mainly for the iMovie app and am having a hard time importing movies from my Mini-Toshiba camera(Camileo)...I have converted the files to MOV, MP4, MPEG4 and M4V before syncing to the Imovie through ITunes...so far have been unsuccessful...can you please help...I am ready to give it back to Best Buy!
Thanks.
Thanks iCara! Accessing video from photos (having checked the "include videos" box) worked like a charm.
The Help documentation in the iMovie app is useless for importing video.
I also spent two hours on the phone with four different Apple Support people. One of them asked me if the app came with my iPad or if I purchased it from the Apple Store. The fourth guy--the "iMovie expert"--told me that it is not possible to import video shot on another device to edit it in iMovie on the iPad. I wonder what the "Import" button in iMovie for iOS4 is for?
I have now successfully imported my Go Pro Hero movies into iMovie. I had to convert the resolution of the .mov file to match the iPad format of 640x480.
This is very frustrating. I too have the camera connection kit. I can take pictures and videos with my camera (a Canon), and I can load those into the photos app on the iPad (BTW, the photos app is astonishingly bad. Where is iPhoto???). BUT, I cannot import the videos into iMovie to edit on the iPad. In addition, I cannot import movies from my Sony HD video camera into the iPad at all. I suspect this must be a video format or resolution issue. The lack of technical information about this is disturbing. I have had a support call with an AppleCare specialist (no help at all) and also an appointment at the local Genius bar. Slightly more helpful, but still the answer is "you can't do that."
The bottom line seems to be that you cannot import into iMovie from the CCK. Not sure when/if they will remedy this, but I'm going to try and get my money back for iMovie. I feel like I was completely misled into buying it.
So I was hoping on being able to edit on the go with my Canon t2i which shoots 1080p or 720p, a camera connection kit, and my iPad 2. When imported the video the iPad couldn't play it, I understood that so I reencoded it to 30fps at 720p. It would play on the iPad in the imported album, but didn't allow iMovie to see the footage.
I just bought the camera connection kit for this very reason: to import video from my Canon and edit in the awesome looking new iMovie for iPad. My first video clips (recorded in 1080p) would not show up or play, and just had a big "MOV" on a gray square. Now I'm reading people are only having success with video from camera enabled iDevices. I don't have any of these besides the iPad, which I'm not too enthused about shooting much video on when I have a much better tool for the job. I'm quite disappointed in this fact and that I even bought the camera connection kit. If Apple engineers are listening, please upgrade iMovie to be able to import more video
I'm having the same issue and its extremely frustrating. I can't believe Apple would only allow us to edit videos we take with our iPhone or iPad. 😟
I created a 'Smart Album' in iPhoto that is 'Keyword --> Contains --> Movie'. This then shows ALL videos I have in iPhoto. I then tried syncing this 'Smart Album' to my iPad 2 and it said it copied all 7 videos (there were 6 that did not copy due to an un-supported format).
Going into my Photo Roll on my iPad 2 revealed that 1 video got copied over.
Anyone find a solution yet that works better than this? I want to create 'Home Movies' on my iPad but won't be able to unless it supports video taken with my Digital Camera and other sources.
Unfortunately, videos for various devices won't import into iMovie natively even though the iPad can play them. In order to get your videos to work with iMovie, you need to format appropriately. This means using an external converter before transferring the videos to your iPad. There's another thread floating around that suggest workflows. If I find it, I'll post it here.
I use MediaConverter (Windows) from ArcSoft to convert movies to a compatible iPad format (H.264 / 8Mpbs / 30fps / 2 Channel 44khz). It adds an extra step to the process, but otherwise, works well.
how i did it using gen 1 iPad and imovie 9 and quicktime.
i imported the original video from my lumix dz35 using imovie9.
the imovie app imports the video as thumbnails.
these videos will exist in your MacHD>Places>Movies>iMovie Events
so now you have the video on your mac.
getting the imovie thumb nail clip to itunes is next.
open quicktime, and then hit <Open File> from the file menu navigate to the clip you want in the iMovie Events folder above.
When you locate the movie you want hit the Open button in the bottom right corner and the movie appears in a quicktime movie panel.
In the Quicktime Menu bar is a drop down under <Share>
Choices here are iTunes, MobileMe Gallery & Youtube.
SeLect iTunes
a panel appears promptimg you to choose how to save your movie in itunes.
select the <iPhone & iPod > option
then hit share in the bottom right hand corner
in a moment your movie is saved to the folder
Library>Movies
this is between music and tv shows in the left hand column of the itunes app.
you now have the movie located in your itunes movie libraray.
Next sync your device with itunes.
Ensure that the device you want to transfer the movie to (eg ipod or iphone or ipad) has the
<Sync Movies> button ticked in its itunes>device>Movies panel.
after you sync the movie is now on your iOS device.
to view it touch the <Videos> icon and a your movie is there ready to view.
so basically use Quicktime as the link between iMovie & iTunes
to get movies on your mac into a format that can be shared with itunes and thus any iOS device.
no third party apps or extra messy steps or conversions.
