How do I get iMovies to see my imported videos?

Using iPad2, I purchased the iMovie app, and when I take my home movies in .mov form and import them from iTunes to the iPad, iMovies does not see any videos. Surely this app will work with existing home videos and not just videos shot wight the iPad. If the was the case I never would have bought the app in the first place, I wanted to be able to edit my family vacation videos shot with a local hd cam directly on my iPad.

Anyone know if I am doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Yes, you can import videos to iPad2 from just about any camera and using a PC or Mac.

It is a 2 step process.

1- Convert the video into an iMovie friendly format

2- Import using iTunes (there is a trick to this)

Here we go:

(1)

Use a conversion program, like Handbrake, to convert your original video into a 1280x720 size. In Handbrake, use Average Bitrate (for HD movies) set to 10730 kbps. Set Audio to AAC, Stereo, 44.1kHz sample rate, 128kbps bit rate.

(2)

In iTunes, you just can't drag-and-drop your video to transfer into your iPad. You need to use the "Photos" tab and then select the "Include videos" check box (Steve Jobs, we need to talk...).

Now synch your iPad2 and the video will show up in your camera roll. Have fun!

Here's my scenario:

Purchased the new iPad (3), connected my Canon 7d to it using the camera connection kit, imported all my full res photos AND 720p 60fps videos with no problem. After import, I WAS ABLE TO WATCH THE VIDEOS, no ISSUE whatsoever. I WAS ABLE TO USE THESE VIDEOS in iMOVIE, no problem.

After syncing the new iPad to iTunes, and importing my photos and videos into iPhoto, I deleted the content from my new iPad.

... now here's the goofy twist:

I sync with iTunes and I get the ".MOV cannot be played on this iPad" 😮 😕... Wait a minute, Apple, I JUST WATCHED IT from the camera connection kit but can't import it back over?!?!

Anyone find a way around this?!?! Clearly, the new iPad can play the 720p 60fps .MOV files because I watched them on import from the camera connection kit!!!

Hi - same problem, same frustrations, same disbelief - MP4s from my Canon 550D, already imported into iPhoto on my MBP, could get them into the video folder on my iPad but they weren't importing into iMovie on my iPad3.

I've just followed this guy's instructions, done a test one and have synched with my iPad : it's there in iMovie!!! Haven't done anything with it yet, but feels like it's solved 🙂

Maybe it will work for people here with similar set up and problem.
