iPad 2 iMovie

Is there a way to get the video shot on an iPhone 4 to the camera roll on the iPad 2 to use in iMovie, besides the camera connection kit? Syncing through iTunes through Photos only brings pics, not video, and syncing through iTunes through Video brings them to the iPad, but they do not show up in iMovie. Thanks!

While I understand your POV regarding hordes of angry people after Apple if their video (from other sources) caused iMovie to crash, or sputter... but I don't really buy it - either a digital file is formatted a certain way, or it is not - a .jpg by any other name is a .jpg (and would look as sweet) I guess what I find irksome is that in the marketing - the shots shown for the advertising look to be of a higher quality than I have yet achieved using my ipad 2 camera - I would venture a guess that their ad campain uses video sourced from other devices...

..still I haven't given up hope - I am sure there will a way to do it - just haven't found it yet.

I just imported some videos from 2 different cameras using the camera connection kit. Videos from my Nikon D300s were in AVI format and I could view them on the iPad and also import them into iMovie.

Then I plugged in the SD card from my Olympus Stylus tough. I imported 10 videos, all play on the Ipad, but only 3 of them I could use in iMovie. The other ones were marked with an exclamation point.

It looks like most of my clips work.

As far as getting the files on/off the iPad/2 this article is great:

This works fine for movies shot on ipad/iphon, but I still haven't found a video converter for my PC that will make my old videos show up in iMovie. I tried on that converted to .MOV, but the video still wouldn't show up. I'll update this if I find one....There has to be a way!!

I am starting to believe that those iMovie importing issues are only happening on the Ipad 2. I am running iMovie on an iPad 1, which doesn't even have a "Camera Roll". iMovie is looking in ALL photo/video folders instead. As a result, almost all my videos can be imported to iMovie.

This is quite funny, given the fact that iMovie is not even supported on the iPad 1.

is it paranoid to think maybe +that's why+ iMovie isn't supported on iPad1?

OK, after hours of working it out, I think I have a solution, at least its working for me.
1. Download Aleesoft Free iPad Video Converter.
2. Open up the program and select new task.
3. Open up the video you want iMovies to "see"
4. Select "iPad HD Video (*.mp4)" then click options.
5. On the audio tab, the following should be selected:
-Double Channel
-aac
-44100 sampling rate
-128 bit rate
6. On the video tab, the following should be selected:
-h264 video codec
-30 frame rate
-2500 bit rate
7. On the resize tab, select the custom size and make it 1280X720, aspect ratio normal
8. Click save and apply.
9. Then pick your destination folder and select "Convert"
10. Once its done, put that video into any of your "Photo" folders that syncs with iTunes and you should be able to see the video in iMovie.

Good Luck.

Zwiller5! I think I am 90% of the way there - I took your advise and got all the way to #10 on your list - but when I sync'd the files (they look great after the conversion!) - they landed in the "movies" folder on my ipad 2 - Just like my coppies of "nightmare Before Christmas" and "Despicable Me"... and like those films - iMovie doesn't let me import them - it is like they are categorized as purchased films - which they would never let me edit.. Maybe I am putting them in the wrong place, or syncing them incorrectly... They play fine on the ipad though... I just can't figure how to get imovie to "see" them.

I agree - the ipad screen and the touch interface seems like a great way to male use of our other HD video devices - I mean the cameras on the ipad are great for facetime and such - but to walk around with my ipad trying to record anything more than record shots and impromptu moments seem a tad bit unweildy.... Just gotta figure out how to get my converted movies to the camera roll instead of the "movies" folder...
