mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.6)
I found there Program not as MacKeeper in the Apple App Store,
but under the name "911 Bundle" (MacKeeper light version)
while in other Post Sana_Paul is referring to MacKeeper being available in the Appstore.
But neither in the US, UK or German Apple Mac App Store can I find the Software listed as "MacKeeper"
So, I also have my serious Doubts!
I have a MacBook (late 2006). A couple of days ago, l tried the free MacKeeper version without any purchase and was bombarded with e-mails urging me to buy it soon. Since reading the posts here, I decided I had better get rid of it. I found a version was on my LaunchPad and I tried to drag it to the trash - didnt work!
Then I quit the program but it appears it is not possible to quit. I have CleanMyMac so I tried uninstalling, and got the message that MacKeeper was still running. I was then invited to force quit which also didn't work. After much fiddling, CleanMyMac offered me a QuickErase option which DID work.
I agree with earlier writers 100%. Do not even use the free trial for this pestiferous program. It's worse that a legful of burrs - very hard to get rid of.
This a a malware product. Most of the features you don't need or already have. It is headquartered in the UKRAINE!
DO NOT INSTALL as it will take a lot of effort to uninstall. Just dragging it to the trash can will not uninstall Mackeeper.
Do a search of "MacKeeper Uninstall" and most of the links direct you to Mackeeper website. They ask for personal information to uninstall. I think it a trojan horse capturing personal info on your computer.
Best link to uninstall mackeeper is : http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
Reboot and then search again in the finder for Mackeeper. If found go to finder, drag files to trash, go to finder menu again and click on "Secure Empty Trash".
So far you are the only one that thinks so.
I have heard of more problems caused by MacKeeper then just about anything else recently.
I stand by my recommendation of avoid MacKeeper at all costed because it is poison for Macs.
Where is your disclaimer about being an employee of Zeobit?
Allan
Allan,
I just posted 9/30 regarding Mackeeper as malware. Your post isn't clear about who it is intended for. Are you saying Mackeeper isn't Malware? I'm not an employee of Zeobit.
My post is to Sana_Paul.
Thanks for that helpful link of how to uninstall MacKeeper.
One of my clients recently complained about a slow iMac so he installed MacKeeper, but it hasn't helped.
After doing some research there is obviously something fishy about Zeobit, and I will be advising all my clients to avoid their software.
Whether or not they are phishing for private information, they have shoddy advertising, they are not really apart of the Mac community, and MacKeeper only does stuff that you already have for free on your mac. There's no point in buying it.
Some people on here are defending the use of anti-virus software. That's a joke. No matter what system you use (Mac or PC) you should always be careful about what you download and install and only download from trusted sources. Macs DO NOT install things without you authorizing it, so there are no viruses. Don't waste your money or time with anti-virus software. For macs, it's a scam. Just be careful about what you download.
As for Sana_Paul, she is on a variety of sites and forums like this defending MacKeeper. She likes to point out that they are on the Mac App Store, so if Apple trusts them, why can't we? I wouldn't be surprised if Zeobit only put a dumbed down version of their software on the Mac App Store just so they could say that. There's probably nothing wrong with the version on the Mac App Store (aside from the fact that it doesn't do anything) but it probably is meant to get people to buy the full version of MacKeeper.

your software MACKEEPER AKA 911 BUNDLE IT IS AN EPIDEMIC OF INFECTIOUS DISEASE. may you burn in H.....
First off... pretty sure you can get a virus on osx. **** like thats came about in eastern europe. so dont rule that out. clamxav isnt bad for a quick scan, but chances are your good. mac keeper id stay away from. in general with osx youl probly be good as long as you know what your doing. and for preventing ads from coming... go thro the command line and bring the develope bar to your safari options and modify the source codes of the page s ur currently streaming urself. its quick easy and u have all the control. dont know html or javascript... just go to w3school.. u dont need to know much. just weed out thhe ads and popups.
also... cookies n caches... clean em out after coming in contact with mac keeper. thro javascript the create n attach cookies to u that track ya. they get ya when the popup coms that says "ok" or "cancel" by interacting with them they get ya. nd if u ever find that stuff downloaded on ur disk b sure to secure empty trash it. wipe it clean.
Viruses? No. Check your facts. If anyone's claiming that OS X has viruses then their is usually an anti-virus software company behind it looking to make a buck.
Trojans? Sure.
The difference is that Macs won't run something without your authorization, so a trojan will try to trick you to make it look like a real app. No software can install itself and activate without you knowing on Mac OS X.
um no... there are viruses for osx. so maybe you should check your facts. there may not be many at (perhaps even just a handful), but they do exist for osx. apple is good about protecting you from them so its very unlikley you will get one unless you deliberately do something to attain one in these times.
however i totally agree about the mac antivirus clams being false.
My Facts: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2009/09/02/why-are-there-no-mac-viruses/
I'm not trying to be biased, I've just never seen or heard of a virus for Mac OS X.
If you can name a virus, I'll gladly change my viewpoint. Good luck.
Sorry dongthong; Trojans are not viruses. They're both malware, but very different animals.
