mac keeper?

Hi have a 2010 mac mini 320gb and as i was surfing the web a website called mac keeper said my mac might be at risk. after seeing the website 10 times then i read what they had to say, it said that it would bring a boost to the mac by antivirus and my mac was very slow at that time so i just installed the app. do you think mac keeper is a good app? thanks in advance.

There are currently no known Viruses for mac. Unless you have noticed a significant decrease in speeds everything is most likely fine. Mac Keeper want you to buy their software, so of course they're going to say its slow. But how can they tell over the internet..?

I'd uninstall Mac Keeper, and check your pop-up settings in Safari. Consider using the Adblock extension too.

Soooo, help me out a bit.

I have MacKeeper installed, and I'm not having any problems with it. However, I don't notice anything running particularly faster either; not that my iMac was running slow to start with. I stumbled across MacKeeper following a link in one of Kim Komando's emails for WiFiGuard (which I really like!). And I'm not getting any pop-ups or spam, as some other posts have reported.

So do I keep it, uninstall it, uninstall and burn incense and chant (sorry, small joke), or what?

I've had roughly 12 years of trouble free usage on Macs starting with my first little white iBook, then MacBook Pro, and finally onto iMacs. I would like to not ruin a perfectly good record. 🙂 I have downloaded, but not yet installed ClamXav; not sure how it will play with my wireless router.

So ... what is/are your recommendation(s)?

Thanks!

Layne

Sorry, thought I was adding this to another reply, and didn't notice I was in "Mac mini"

I wasn't sure if the AV would interfere with my computer's connection to the network. Sounds stupid as I write it, but then I have never used any AV before. Pre Intel, I never felt like I needed it, but Macs hold a slightly larger share of the market now, and there are a variety of bugs that could be an issue today. My knowledge of Anti-Virus software and how it functions is virtually non existent, and I've been going on the "never argue with success" principal, but I think it's time to update to the current environment. Does that explain my otherwise non-sensical statement?

This has nothing to do with MacKeeper, so you need to start a new topic and describe your problem there with a topic other than MacKeeper (e.g. Browser Re-directs).

I would be inclined to believe that you have an unwanted extension installed in your browser or browsers. For Safari open Preferences->Extensions, disable them, restart Safari and see if that takes care of it. If so, then uninstall any extensions you don't recognize. Genio is a strong possiblity here.

Thank you. I have no idea, I'm only trying to solve whatever problem I can through trial and error. I'm reading whatever I can find.... I found this thread, and then found that there was MacKeeper on my computer so I put it in the trash, but the problem isn't going away. I don't know what it is. I will try any and every suggestions---- thank you in advance.

Do you have the mackeeper version prior to 2012 year as described in the uninstall instructions? If so there may also be files in places that would need to be manually removed. A folder in library for mackeeper, for example, esp if mackeeper was installed in a mac with timemachine backup.

But if you have the 2012 or latest version, the uninstall should be fairly straightforward:

http://help.mackeeper.zeobit.com/Manual/GettingStarted/UninstallingMacKeeper.htm l

For older versions, the second section here where it says older, note TimeMachine:

http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/

What mac operating system version and backups do you have? If this was installed and then saved into a backup, there are things to consider before it will be really all gone. The instructions are extensive enough to fill a few pages, so you have to see them in their context & in their pages online. Do you have a different browser than the one you've had issue with? How about a different user account and set up a Firefox, etc web browser?

IF the other issue still remains in which you said you couldn't get a link to these pages to work... And if you put the item from Applications into Trash, and emptied it, does it go away after you restart the computer? The applehelpwriter page has a pile of places to look for bits of this notorious bugware.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

Hi im Gonzalo From Apple-Bay , we have over the pass 2 years lots of mac coming to be replace the Hard Drive, the system got corrupted and could not be repair and show on disk utility as total fail , i notice that 99% of them are with Mac Keeper and after retrieved all the relevant information formating the HD FIX the fault

I cant say it is the mac keeper what it cause this problem but i strongly recommend not to use it and if you do have it already use APPCLEANER to remove safetly

Apple do not function properly wit ANY antivirus it made the mac slow and ocationally give you Kernel panic

DO NOT USE ANTI VIRUS ON A MAC
