Found this

http://support.modwest.com/content/8/52/en/how-do-i-change-my-hosts-file-or-how- can-i-see-my-domain-before-dns-changes-propagate.html

And here's a quick excerpt

# Open Finder.

# In the Go menu, select "Go to Folder"

# Type /etc for the folder name.

# In the list of files that appears, you should find hosts. Double click it to open it in a text editor.

Then simply look for gs.apple.com delete them then save the file.

Then try to ping gs.apple.com to verify your changes.

*also if you are interested in technology and how computers work I suggest you start studying/reading and showing some self reliance... Ping guides are available online as well as how to find and modify your hosts file. My apologies if you're not interested in technology.

Well, without having the computer in front of me or any logs and you having done/verifying all the steps I have mentioned before. I'm afraid I can't help. Time to schedule an appointment (hence the reason I will never OWN a MAC I just don't agree with their customer service/business support model) and go waste time at the apple store or wait for an answer here in case someone has encountered the same error as you and picked up Apple's slack for them.

This solved my problem with the upgrade of my iPad 2 to 4.3.5

In the /etc/hosts file on my computer, there was a line referring to gs.apple.com which was left from a jailbreak of an iPhone long time ago, jailbreak I didn't even needed as Apple finally allowed tethering in 4.1 on unlocked belgian iPhone, 4.1 which was installed after a restore !

Removing this line in hosts was all there was to allow the update to occur on the iPad 2.

Thanks a lot for the info.
