MBP 2011 (feb) Model having weird SD card issues

Hi Guys,

I recent upgraded my MBP from the 2006 15inch model to the latest 2011 15inch higher end series unibody, and I'm experiencing weird problems with the SD Card reader.

I use a Sandisk SDHC Extreme Class 10 SD Card and have problems getting it to read through the inbuild SD card reader.

I tried the following:

Reformatting on Disk Utility
Reformatting on my Canon 450D
Restarting Laptop
Resetting PRAM
Resetting SMC
Repairing Disk Permissions
Repairing Disk

All of these did not solve my problem. I have a card reader which when plugged into the MBP, works fine and detects the card.

The Weird Part

I plugged the card into a friend's iMac and it detects it every time. And then right after I do that, I plug it into my MBP, and it detects the card, but the problem is once I eject it, and slot it back in, it fails to detect again! However if I try this method again (Slot to iMac, remove, slot back to MBP), it will fail the second time.

Now when I take the card and put it into the camera, and take a photo, then slot it back into the SD slot, it detects the card once more, repeat the steps again, and without fail, the card is undetectable again, unless I do something like erase an image off the sd card using the camera, the MBP will then detect the card again upon putting it back in.

-----------

Does anyone here have this same odd experience or do I own a possessed MBP/SD Card?

I have the same problem, although it is not a sandisk card, but still a SDHC class 10. I upgraded my Macbook Pro I got yeasterday from my Time Machine back-up.

I tried rebooting with the card in (as suggested in previous post might make the machine detect the card), but that did not help either.

My previous Macbook Pro, late 2009, worked on and off, as far as I recall. At least the rebooting trick usually would result in a card being recognized (I should mention that the current card I am trying in the brand new machine is also brand new - less than five weeks old).

I hope for a quick fix through software update.

Has anyone tried resetting the System Management Controller as described here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2116213?answerId=10151579022#10151579022

and the link to the instructions for resetting the SMC:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Just curious, as it worked once with my 16GB class 10 Sandisk card... but not since. I can, however, read any non-class 10 card without incident...

The issue definitely appears to be related to the speed of the card, and, IMHO, not related to the capacity of the card.

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Note
: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

I spent an hour and a half while on vacation with apple care and they could not figure it out. They had me try all the things that were suggested here. I came back from Vacation a day early to try to resolve this. I spent over an hour at the Apple Store yesterday with my MacBook and my camera and two employees. If you put the card into a regular MacBook or iMac it can read it. Then after being able to read it on those, when you insert it in a MacBook Pro, it will recognize it. However, once you take another picture with the card, put it back into the MacBook Pro, it will not be recognized again.

Totally crazy. In the end I returned the computer. I had bought the one in stock with an anti-glare screen but it only had a 5400 speed HD. Really wanted the 7200 speed anyway. When they get this fixed, I'll order the one I really want. Can't bring myself to buy a windows laptop!

Until then, my iMac and I will be just fine. 🙂

A question for others, do you find that is you use a USB card reader that it will read the 45mb cards fine?

Yes. I have an SDHC card reader that came with my first 4GB SDHC Sandisk card... with that device, I can read any and all SD/SDHC cards in my MacBook Pro... so far, though, Apple has not been able to solve this issue...nor have they even acknowledged the specifics of the issue. My friend had the same issue with a mid-2010 MPB and when he went to the Apple store, they agreed to replace the main logic board... and that worked the first couple of times he tried to read the card, then, blamo, right back where he was...

Hi Guyz,

Its seems that all of you are using the new 2011 MacBook Pro's.

As per my knowledge the new MBP's boot up n 64 Bit Mode.

Has any one tried the same using the 32Bit Mode.

One can boot up in the 32 Mode by pressing the "3" and "2" key at startup.

Can you please try this out and let us know if the problem persists.

Ashwin Bhadra.
