MBP 2011 (feb) Model having weird SD card issues

I'm actually a little relieved to hear that I'm not alone.

I have a six-year-old camera that won't use high capacity cards, but I have a 2 GB Sandisk card which my card slot is having trouble reading. It took three or four insertions (and a little bit of cussing) for it to finally mount.

The fact that this is a common problem likely means that a fix is coming. I was afraid it was a problem with the card slot in my new MacBook Pro.

I have now tried starting in 32 bit mode on my 1.5 month old Macbook Pro. Unfortunately it did not help :-(

PS: I verified in activity monitor that it was in 32 bit kernel mode.

I don't know anyone who is in the OS X developer program... so I don't know anyone who could test it... but hopefully OS X Lion will resolve the issue for us.

Developers are under a non-disclosure agreement. They can't tell you anything about Lion that Apple hasn't formally announced.

Has anyone here tried their SD cards after running the fairly recent firmware update (available via Software Update)?

I did the 10.6.7 update on March the 22 2011. And I did the firmware update on June the 1st 2011 on my new MacBook Pro 2011 i7. I think you are right, it might be the firmware update the culprit.

Waiting for the next one and using an external card reader in the meanwhile.

The trouble I had with my Sandisk SD card were prior to me applying the firmware update, so that wouldn't appear to be the problem.

However if I try this method again (Slot to iMac, remove, slot back to MBP), it will fail the second time.

Now when I take the card and put it into the camera, and take a photo, then slot it back into the SD slot, it detects the card once more, repeat the steps again, and without fail, the card is undetectable again, unless I do something like erase an image off the sd card using the camera, the MBP will then detect the card again upon putting it back in.

Does anyone here have this same odd experience or do I own a possessed MBP/SD Card?

I just upgraded to OS X 10.6.8 and the problem appears to be fixed... I was able to read 2 different SanDisk 16GB 30mb/s cards twice...

Thanks for letting know the updates are available already. i do hope it fix the problem forever.

I have updated to OS X 10.6.8 and tried a Sandisk and a TDK SD Card and no one works....

thats weird Bernard, i've update to 10.6.8 and my SD Extreme 8GB class 10 works now. I hope you can find solutions for your system 🙂

I still don't get it... I am still convinced that it's a software issue... and, as I said (above), the OS upgrade does fix the issue for me - and it appears to be true for others... yet some, like Bernard, are still experiencing the problem. C'mon, Apple, come clean about this one... please? (and yeah, I realize that they don't actively monitor these forums - they should.)

I can confirm my 32GB SD cards now work every time 🙂

Upgrading to 10.6.8 didn't work for me at all, but upgrading to 10.7.0 (Lion) worked :-)

Here's the gist. 13" mbp early 2011. Transcend SDHC class 6 8GB card. Canon Digital Rebel Xsi. My issue isn't with the card not showing up, it's that fact that none of my pictures are available for import on it. It's like the Macbook corrupts the file system every time I insert it. I have the most recent software updates for snow leopard 10.6.8 and it's the same situation as before.

I'd get Lion like ligaard, but I have too much software that I'm afraid will break if I upgrade. I'm planning to make a trip to an apple store to chit chat about it. I'll post back with any info I gather.
