iPad not eligible for the requested build in 4.3 iOS update?

I have an iPad1 running iOS 4.2.1 set up with a mac and iTunes 10.2.1.

After plugging in my iPad, iTunes informed me that there was an iOS update available (iOS 4.3). I tried having it download and install the update.

I get an alert box that the iPad could not be updated. It said that the iPad wasn't eligible for the requested build. Hunh? Clearly it is eligible - Apple said so via iTunes.

I tried rebooting the iPad and the Mac but the same error message occurred.

I don't see a pile of these errors on a Google search so I assume this is something specific to my iPad (never jailbroken, plain vanilla iPad regularly backed up and updated via iTunes).

Any idea?

wingiv,

thanks that worked imidiately after following ur steps. **** TU had me looking around n around. weird thing is i tried it on different computers and it had the same problem. did TU put the block on my ipad? hmm... anyways.. it worked.. 🙂

for the rest... these are the steps i used..

This works. Thanks. The best way to do this is through the terminal. Just do the following commands in terminal:

Type sudo su

Press enter

Then enter your password and hit enter

Type vi /etc/hosts

Move your cursor with the down arrow to the line that has gs.apple.com without a # at the beginning of the line.

Move cursor to the beginning of that line.

Type i# then press the esc key.

Type :wq

Press enter

Type exit

Press enter

Now you can quit out of the terminal application. This likely is a problem caused by Tiny Umbrella denying itunes communicating with the apple servers.

Oooh. Sounds like ~someone~ has been doing naughty things on your computer -- particularly with the HOSTS file. I don't think I'm eligible to give links or a direct explanation of the problem *ahem* here. I've said enough, now do your homework and delete that line of extra code...

*edit* OH~! Didn't see somebody already posted the solution. Well, let's see how long this page lasts on these forums now that that's been posted.

SOLTION!!

-Put your iPad or iPod into DFU mode, then iTunes is forced to restore it!

First Shut Down your iDevice

After its shut down, hold the power button for 3 seconds.

Then after 3 seconds of holding down the Power Button, press the home button and the power button for 10 seconds.

Then after that hold down the home button. iTunes should now pop up asking to restore your iDevice.

Say Yes! and WALA!

I tried all the previous "solutions", to no success. So, I noticed I have an older version of Tiny Umbrella hidden on my computer, so I just updated it. Then, I unselected "Set Hostes to Cydia on Exit" under the advanced tab, turned off TinyUmbrella, restarted iTUnes and it FINALLY worked. Here's a link for some help http://leimobile.com/this-device-isnt-eligible-for-the-requested-build/

This is the ONLY thing that worked, very frustrating, but I'm finally updated to the 4.3.3 iOS update. I hope this helps somebody out there. Best of luck.
