iPad not eligible for the requested build in 4.3 iOS update?

I have an iPad1 running iOS 4.2.1 set up with a mac and iTunes 10.2.1.

After plugging in my iPad, iTunes informed me that there was an iOS update available (iOS 4.3). I tried having it download and install the update.

I get an alert box that the iPad could not be updated. It said that the iPad wasn't eligible for the requested build. Hunh? Clearly it is eligible - Apple said so via iTunes.

I tried rebooting the iPad and the Mac but the same error message occurred.

I don't see a pile of these errors on a Google search so I assume this is something specific to my iPad (never jailbroken, plain vanilla iPad regularly backed up and updated via iTunes).

Any idea?

I am not aware of ever having used TinyUmbrella, an my iPad 1 is not and has never been JB'd.

This worked like a charm:

Just do the following commands in terminal:

Type sudo su

Press enter

Then enter your password and hit enter

Type vi /etc/hosts

Move your cursor with the down arrow to the line that has gs.apple.com without a # at the beginning of the line.

Move cursor to the beginning of that line.

Type i# then press the esc key. (this makes the cursor jump down several lines)

Type :wq

Press enter

Type exit

Press enter

Now you can quit out of the terminal application.

But one thing I DO NOT understand is that the iPad alledgedly only restores the basic things, and not content like music, film and stuff. But it still requires space on the HD for a restore-copy of all content on the iPad?

did I have a choice re. what to backup?

I removed ALL of my music from the iPad to equal the space I could make on my mac, but it was still somehow backed up, as the needed space for backup rose from the sulting 12 GB after removing music to 21 GB, which alluded that iTunes had in fact not deleted music on the iPad. Many annoying things about the update - but its done now and Im free to hate it or love it, but it doesn't go away, and now at least I csn update my apps without having to remove and reinstall iOS needy apps prior to and after update of all apps. VERY annoying, Apple!
