Tethering iPad to Cellphone via Bluetooth PAN keep disconnecting

Bluetooth tethering to IPODs and IPADs from a cell phone works now thanks to IOS4.3, not just wifi.

When the iPad is tethered via Bluetooth PAN (internet sharing on some phones), a chain link icon will show up next beside the iPad where usually the WIFI icon would appear if a WIFI signal is detected.

I am having some issues with it. The connection cuts after 30 seconds but for those 30 seconds I do have interneet connectivity! Is anyone else experiencing this disconnect? Is anyone trying this on a non-iPhone cell phone? Yes tethering is enabled by my carrier as the tether works fine to my laptop over Bluetooth PAN.

Thanks

iOS 4

I noticed that this occurs when connecting via Bluetooth to a Windows Mobile phone. I confirmed this on more then one winmo phone. The tether works without issue when connected to an iPhone but suspiciously does not with a noniPhone. I have not yet confirmed this against an Android device. If this is the case, Apple has implemented a nonstandard Bluetooth tethering solution requiring the use of an iPhone and no other cell devive. This would not be very cool and hope it's not true.

Let me get this straight... you're crying foul because the feature that you are trying to use, which isn't advertised as a feature to begin with, isn't working?

Muddybulldog - you are adding nothing to the discussion so why bother commenting at all?

Bluetooth tethering is a new feature of IOS 4.3 so I am sure it wasn't released by accident. Whether is has been advertised or not is of no consequence. I am abiding by standard Bluetooth PAN configuration and not jailbreaking anything. As long as standard Bluetooth PAN has been enabled, it should work, no?

I love how people pick fights. For the record, I was never an Apple fan but I am starting to come around and liking the products. I guess people dont like it when Apple is questioned. I am sure there is a reasonable explanation why this doesn't work besides being an unadvertised feature.

sigh....

Bluetooth tethering does work with other phones, not just iPhones now. I don't have an iPad, but I do have an iPod touch 4G, never jail broken, with the new iOS4.3 update. I'm able to tether it to my SonyEriccson TM717, which is a non-smartphone, through Bluetooth PAN. It works reasonably well, and stays connected longer then 30 seconds. So far it has stayed connected, as long as I have wanted to, so long as I have a decent 3G/Edge signal. So far the only thing that doesn't seem to work, using the BT tethering, is the location services on the iPod, other then that it's great.

My carrier is T-Mobile, but not sure if that makes a difference.

Since the iPad and iPod touch are both running the new iOS4.3, and tethering with Bluetooth PAN, my setup is similar to yours, and I wouldn't think the Bluetooth hardware in both devices would be that different.

It may be something about the type of Bluetooth hardware your phone has, or the Windows OS it runs, but Bluetooth tethering definately works with non iPhones.

Just wanted to add my Bluetooth tethering experience using a non iPhone cellphone.

I do have such an issue as well, with Windows Mobile phone. Looks like it is initiated on WM side, because when I was experimenting with Windows Mobile registry, sometimes WM phone hung up and personal tethering icon remained active for more than 30 seconds (though, there were no internet connectivity).

I successfully connect MacBook to this phone via PAN, without such an issue.

I found that connection is actually lasts for 20 seconds (+- a second).

I to have discovered this problem. I was surprised to see this work, but annoyed that it cut off very quickly. I can't determine for sure if it is my Windows Mobile 6.1 that kills the connection or my 1st Generation iPad.

Usually if the cell connection drops, I get an error on Internet Sharing, but I don't see anything this time. I have tethered my Windows 7 laptop to this phone many times before, and based on what I see, I think the iPad is disconnecting the bluetooth link. When I turn off bluetooth on my laptop, Internet Sharing on the mobile would simply close the connection, and be ready for me to hit connect again. This is exactly what I see happening here.

Its a race against the clock to access what I need to see. Anyone have any ideas?

I also have the same problem, Windows Mobile 6.1 and a 1st gen iPad. Bluetooth disconnects after about 30 seconds.

To check and make sure it was the iPad and not my phone (Treo Pro) I bluetooth tethered from my phone to a Macbook Air, and connection lasted several minutes before I manually disconnected. While connected with the bluetooth tether, I tested the Macbook at 1mb down and 200kb up on speedtest.net. Sprint network. That's only a little slower than tethering from the phone to the Macbook Air using wifi.

Would be nice for Apple to get this fixed, I think the phone battery might last longer using bluetooth instead of wifi.
