I have also noticed the streaks on my iPad 2 using the gray polyurethane Smart Cover. It's not a huge issue, but it is disappointing.
This is also what I am doing, really neat!
This is caused by the natural oil in skin, when you use the iPad and the smart covers the only cover and wipe part of the screen, not all of it as teh folds do not touch. That is where the oil is, as the cover only slightly touches these parts when you take it off or on.
To clear them up, fold the cover into a triangle and wipe from top to bottom with one edge of the cover. That will clear them up.
My streaks are not caused by the cover. Yes, it does cause streaks, but that is not the kind of streaks I am concerned about. Mine are static looking streaks. It goes away if I press in the center of the back, but when I release, it gets the streaks again. Sometimes it goes off & when I press in the center of the back, it wil come back on.
