Trouble with new network settings.

I am trying to help my sister set up a new dial-up ISP connection. Her new ISP must dynamically assign DSN numbers; their instructions require that the DNS and Search Domain fields under the TCP/IP tab be left blank. However, after clearing the old ISP DNS numbers and domain name, I get an error message if I proceed to click anything else. The message reads: "An address you entered is not formatted correctly. Each name server IP address must consist of four numbers 0-255 separated by periods." Since we do not need any DNS numbers with the new ISP I can't understand why this message comes up? How do I correct this? My sister's Mac is a G4 800 MHZ iMac running OS 10.2.6 (one of the "table lamp" iMacs).

If you're using dialup, the chances are your TCP/IP settings should be set to 'Using PPP'.

In this case the DNS numbers are optional and you should be able to leave the field blank.

Are you, in fact, set to PPP? or are you using some other option?

If you have checked PPP, the only other thing I can think of is that there's some other value there that you can't see. have you tried tabbing to the field and hitting backspace before continuing, just in case there are spaces or other non-printing characters there?

Finally, despite what your ISP says, there shouldn't be anything that demands you leave this blank. You should still be able to get online even with a value set in this field, although your online experience might not be optimal.
