There is a SIM card tray in the New iPad CDMA (Verizon) Version, and I've also confirmed this with an Apple representative via Online Chat help. It will also work with any data capable SIM card from an overseas carrier, the speed/band depends on the carrier's service (Note: you can't switch between US carriers). The following excerpt from Apple website has made it clear "Ready to take on the world:The new iPad offers the most comprehensive support for fast networks around the world. It’s designed with two cellular antennas tuned to 12 different bands that access a larger frequency spectrum. That means you can travel almost anywhere in the world and get online. And your connection is always fast. iPad with Wi-Fi + 4G models for AT&T and for Verizon connect to GSM/UMTS networks worldwide. But if you want a local connection when you’re traveling, just pop in a local SIM card" from: http://www.apple.com/ipad/4g/.
Sorry, I was talking about the new iPad (I don't know why I assumed this) but after submitting my reply I noticed that you're asking about iPad 2.
You are right cincibrain; however, I just want to add more comment about the detail of all ipad/ iphone by:
- they can review the apple website
- they can visit with http://www.gsmarena.com/apple-phones-48.php
- or they can joint with this forum
There are cell carriers in India for CDMA and I have already spoken to MTS and all that they want is the ESN number of my iPad which I am not able to procure from Apple so far.
All u need is the ESN number of your iPad 2 from Apple. ESN number is just like the one that any other non-sim based CDMA phones have like HTC, Blackberry CDMA handsets.
We need to get this ESN number from Apple only. I have written to them but there is no response from them
