FaceTime connection problems

I have a black Macbook from 2007, running the latest version of Snow Leopard. When I FaceTime my wife's iPhone 4, she accepts the FT invitation, but it never connects. On my end, it just keeps ringing, and never shows her attempts to answer. This app has been a real source of frustration for me, as it has only connected about 50% of the time.

Oh, and I am using a broadband connection, over which I have connected once before. But only once.

Macbook 13.3" 1 GB RAM 16o GB HD Black, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I have used FaceTime to talk to my son in China without any problems. But I can't talk to some people in the same time zone. So it may be necessary to set the time and date correctly but it can't be the main cause of connection problems.
