I think you're right and I also think that two more magnets would have solved the problem.
If you hold the iPad so the cover is down you will notice a 'V' as the middle of the cover opens slightly. That usually isn't enough to move the magnet alignment enough to cause a release. However, if you move the cover even slightly to the left then the attachment is broken. This is with a new cover. I suspect that it will only get worse.
Two magnets, one near the 30-pin connector and one at the opposite end would solve the problem. I don't see that happening and as much as I like the black leather cover I may be forced to go another route because it simply won't stay closed under normal use.
