Smart Cover FALL DOWN when hold upside down

I have noticed this same behavior with my blue poly smart cover. When new, it seemed to stick very firmly, but now after 4+ days of use, it doesn't stay put very firmly. I hope it's just the cover, as I was planning on taking it back to see if a new one would function better.

I bought last Saturday my iPad 2 with a light blue poly Smart Cover. I have not seen any issues with the smart cover falling or losing the ability to stick to the iPad. I did put a clear screen on the back of the iPad because I think that a metal-to-metal contact might create some scratches in the side. Before you ask, I bought one iPad 1st Gen full body InvisiShield by ZAGG and made the cuts for the camera, the mic, speakers and other buttons. Not an easy task but worth it. Probably I'll change it when ZAGG comes with their iPad 2 version of the full body InvisiShield. But going back to your question, no problem here with the Smart Cover.

Any updates on this? I had the black leather cover and had to returned it because they did not have any more to exchange. Do you think the problem might be with the magnets in the ipad not being strong enough or the cover?

Just posted a new topic, but I'm having issues with a different magnet it seems, the one to trigger standby when you open/close it. My iPad 2 will randomly start up when resting with the cover closed.

I've the same issue, every day it's getting worst. I went to the Apple store yesterday (8 days after the purchase). They offer me immediately a new one, but surprise, this was not the smart cover! The new one had the same issue on my iPad. So we tried my stupid cover to a couple of iPad in the store and... surprise, this is not the iPad either. My smart cover was not working on brand new ipads. So the guy at the genius bar comes to the conclusion this is the normal behavior. I paid $69 for an accessory fully functional only 4 days!

I ended up returning mine and buying a Targus case for now. It ***** because I loved the smart cover concept, but it is unacceptable that the cover falls off when carrying it sideways.

Same problem here. I have the gray cover and have noticed as it gets "worked in" it seems to stick less and less. If I hold the IP2 upside down with my thumb only on the section furthest to the left, it will fall down immediately. I have also noticed that since there is a slight overhang on the right side, that a light touch will cause the smart cover to come loose. It would be nice if there were some small magnets on the top and bottom edges towards the middle of the device.

Has anyone been able to get a replacement cover that seems to fix the problem?

I have absolutely no issues with my Smart Cover. I have the gray polyvinyl cover. I can hold my iPad with the cover attached, hanging open by the hinge, vigorously shake the iPad and the cover does not come off.

If I attach it backwards, inside out, yes it falls off. Are all of you attaching it correctly? The tiny writing along the hinge that says +Designed by Apple in California. Made in China+ is the inside.

Yea I got the Product red cover. It was fine for 2 days and when I try to close it lately, it falls off. More worse, it has no big purpose but to lock the screen without pressing anything. Does not protect the screen what so ever. USELESS BUY. Ipad 2 is of course great as usual

I've had this same problem. I have the black leather cover. The first few days it seemed to stay secure. But now it slides around much more and definitely falls open if I hold the iPad upside down.

Seeing how everyone seems to have eliminated the magnets of both devices as the culprit, I think I know what the problem is. It's the joint flexibility. Fresh and never folded the joints are more stiff, which means it doesn't buckle/pop up easily. After a few days of folding though the joints are much more flexible, causing them to buckle if the cover slides around. Since the magnet hold it in place is at the edge of the cover, if the cover slides a little the magnets are no longer aligned, hence the falling open.

If I'm right, then sadly this is a design flaw that can't be remedied by replacements.

I think you're right and I also think that two more magnets would have solved the problem.

If you hold the iPad so the cover is down you will notice a 'V' as the middle of the cover opens slightly. That usually isn't enough to move the magnet alignment enough to cause a release. However, if you move the cover even slightly to the left then the attachment is broken. This is with a new cover. I suspect that it will only get worse.

Two magnets, one near the 30-pin connector and one at the opposite end would solve the problem. I don't see that happening and as much as I like the black leather cover I may be forced to go another route because it simply won't stay closed under normal use.

Poor design. Unlike the cover for the iPad, the Smartcover for the iPad 2 has nothing to grip the iPad with, and the aluminum case, while beautiful, is very slippery. As a result, if you use the cover as support, it falls off. What I did was put a piece of clear tape over the long edge where the cover attaches and it seems to do the trick. Also, I put a piece of clear contact paper (transparent film) over the entire back, which made it a little less slippery.

I believe that you lot have misunderstood the purpose of the Smart Cover and are expecting it to do what it was not designed to do.

It is a cover, not a case. It is meant solely to protect the display when the iPad is not in use. It is designed to be installed and removed in barely a second and even facilitates the ease with which that is accomplished by using magnets, magnets which even self align the cover during its quick installation.. I do not believe that aside from also providing on those occasions when you nee it to be a prop or stand, it is meant to be removed for iPad use. I have been doing this from day one and am more than pleased with my Smart Cover.

If you require the facility of a case for how you personally/individually use your iPad, then you very much would be unhappy with the Smart Cover and indeed should seek another product.

same problem here. I just installed a Zagg invisishield and am wondering if it's because of that. Basically the smart cover doesn't snap into place anymore, it's as if the magnets lost most of their power... I've had it less than a week now...
