iPad 2 WiFi + 3G Verizon Cellular Data Issue

When I try to connect to the cellular data it just says iPad or Searching in the top of the screen. It did work last night. If I do a hard reset I can get it to work. Switching Airplane mode on and off to reset the modem does NOT work. Anyone have any ideas?

Wow, I have these same problems - kinda. Last Saturday, (March 26th, 2011) I went to my local Apple store and 'camped-out' in the early morning hours to get my iPad 2. I was first in line when they finally came out with tickets for a very limited supply. They initially said that they only had AT&T WiFi/3G model in 64g so I said I'll take it. An hour or so later, when the store opened up to sell them to us, the girl said that they had mistakenly marked the tickets with AT&T models when they should have said Verizon. Well, I didn't want to do all that waiting for nothing so I said I would buy it.

Later that night I tried to Activate the Cellular Data Account and received the Activation error - the story goes on and on from there. Today is Tuesday and I still haven't been able to activate a cellular data account.

Ya, I can get on wireless at my home through my DSL. Ya, I can create a hot-spot using my Nexus One Android phone, and ya, I can probably pay AT&T some extra monthly monies so that I can have my iPhone create a hot-spot also...but man, I would like to go through cellular networks when I'm out and about!

Talk about Verizon support, I've probably been on the phone with Verizon for a total of an hour and a half - about 4 different people. One of them never hardly said anything during the whole 45 minute ordeal and he couldn't figure out things either. He had me reset everything and wait, and wait, and wait...! Finally I told him that I'll have to call back another time when I have more time and he just said, "ok...no worries!???"

Now, here's what I've been told by Verizon so far. The first person wanted me to be sure that I didn't use any email address in the Cellular Data Activation screen that had been used for any 'i' device in the past. ('i' = iPhone, etc.) Then he ran the zip code of the credit card I was using and told me that all the phone numbers for that zip code were taken and he would have to fill out a special form that gets sent to Apple. I would then be hearing back from Apple within 24 to 72 hours.

After almost 2 days I then got an email from Verizon and I'll type out exactly what it says here:

=============================================
You have received this e-mail to notify you that you may now activate your iPad 2 on VZW network. Before you begin your activation, please be sure to download iTunes 10.2 to your personal computer via www.apple.com/itunes/download. You will need to connect the iPad 2 using the Apple USB cable. Click OK on the pop-up boxes. Disconnect the iPad 2 from the computer.

To activate your iPad 2, please follow the process below:

1. Tap Settings > Cellular Data > View Account
2. Enter user information, desired login information and select the desired data plan. Enter payment details. Tap Next.
3. If agreed upon, accept the Terms & Conditions by tapping Agree.
4. Review the payment summary screen and , if accurate, tap Submit.
5. Congratulations message appears on screen and states that an email notification will be sent to you, once activation is complete. Tap OK. You will also receive a pop-up on your device once the plan is activated.

If setup fails, or if you have additional questions, please contact the iPad 2 Customer support team at 1-800-786-8419 to speak with a qualified service representative for further assistance.

We appreciate your business and thank you for using Verizon Wireless.

Ok, that's the end of their email that I got yesterday. So when I tried all that, it still didn't work. That's when I called them back and spent that 45 minutes with the 'silent guy'. After I left the silent-guy, I called them right back and got a different person who seemed to know much more but not enough. She said that they still don't have any open phone numbers for my billing zip code. She ended up re-submitting the form to Apple so I guess I wait another 1 to 3 days. She didn't know why Verizon sent me that email that said I could now get cellular data.

How many people is this happening to!? Is this making the news? Is there anyone with a Verizon iPad 2 that has had no problems at all? Is there anyone out there that can help me?

Wow, please correct me if I'm wrong but if you read a single post in this thread you would know that your issue is quite different than the discussion here. Our iPads are activated and when they are connected to 3G they work just fine. The issue here is that a reboot or sometimes two reboots are necessary to connect to 3G after you've been on wifi only for a while. I am sorry about your bad experience with V customer service though; 'no worries!?' what a crock. I have 54 lines with Verizon and I have had great experience with their customer service but it might be because I get put into a different queue for biz customers. Also, I bought my iPad at Verizon, it seems the process may be convoluted going through apple, though others here have purchased at apple and have arrived at what is now the relevant issue here. I wish you luck because when you do get that thing activated you will likely end back in this thread and on topic.

cplus: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that Verizon support was bad at all, I was just telling of my experience with them and only one I consider bad. It was the original poster of this thread 'nixxon2000' that said 'This is horrible customer service' and not I. Verizon customer support has helped me out in understanding my problem thus far. I sure hope I hear from Apple soon.

The only reason I posted this message on this topic was because when I goggled the terms (can't activate cellular data verizon ipad 2) you'll see that google pulls up this thread first.

Also, this subject (iPad 2 WiFi + 3G Verizon Cellular Data Issue) is all about the cellular data activation problem and yes, I did read through everyone of the post on this thread and studied them throughout.

The original first question on this thread is all about nixxon2000 having problems activating his cellular data account. I understand that the discussion may have veered off the original topic, I found a lot of what I read in this thread has to do with cellular data working correctly.

I appreciate everyones input here and thank you for your help cplus.

Ok, I just got off the phone with Verizon again, this time because they sent me that same 'You can now activate your cellular data' email again.

This time, for the first time, they asked me what city I live in and then they told me I don't have Verizon coverage in my area. In fact, Verizon coverage is very minimal East of Oklahoma City and other parts of Oklahoma. That is why certain credit card billing zip codes will not be able to activate a cellular data plan, because you don't have Verizon coverage in that area.

If a person still wants to keep their Verizon iPad 2, even though they can't get a signal where they live, they can still activate a cellular data plan if they use a credit card with a zip code area where they do cover.

When I was at the Apple store and they told me that they only had Verizon models, I sure wish they would have mentioned these things to me. Oh well, I'm seriously thinking of still keeping it and just using it WiFi and my cell phone hot-spot. I will end up getting cellular data in the future (with a proper zip coded credit card) and then at least I'll have service when I'm away from home.

I hope this helps others - thank you.

As a follow up to my issues with Verizon customer service. When I first called it was day one of the Ipad 2 release and there customer servers was an issue. Now more recently that I have called they have improved, however, they are still unable to correct my issue and still pass the blame to Apple. Not to say that its all Verizon's fault, I believe its a mix of software issues from both companies.

In regards to the issue at hand, after multiple visits to Apple and Verizon there is still not hard fix. I am able to use Cellular data from time to time after a few reboots. The newest update has not fixed my issue.

To get back on topic. I would be curious to see how many people are still have the issue I am.

It seems like a mix of problems on this thread. The one that I started was not being able to get cellular data. It either says IPad in the corner or Searching.

I am glad I am not the only person with this issue, however, would LOVE to get it resolved.

So far I have been able to narrow down the problem to the wireless radio.

Reboot the the iPad with the wireless radio on and everything should work normally.

If the iPad is ever turned off with the radio off it will not come back on until the iPad is restarted with the radio on.

Since this problem seems to only be a Verizon issue I am going to be returning and switching to a AT&T model. I found a nice manager at a local apple store that is going to call me when one gets in stock.
