Time machine won't start

Am connected to a 500 gb WD external hard drive. I click on the time machine application and the fancy screen with approaching stars comes up with the hard drive screen.
But nothing happens.
No screen with options to choose from, just the incoming stars and the date sidebar.
The external looks like it is doing something but isn't.
Maybe that WD doesn't work with Time machine.
?
Thanks.

Have you set up Time Machine to do backups to your WD drive?

If not, go to +System Preferences > Time Machine+ to select the disk for use with Time Machine.

You might want to review the [Time Machine Tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics] and perhaps browse [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). See #21 there, especially.
