Internet-Tethering iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.1

Hi everyone out there,

I am from Austria/Europe and have been using my iPhone 3G since 2008. I have a contract with the Austrian T-mobile company that allows internet-tethering which I was used to apply without problems until today.
When I updated my iPhone 3G today from iOS version 3.1 to 4.2.1 (because of the new iCal update) the internet-tethering button in the settings->network menu simply disappeared. If I connect my iPhone to my Mac Book via USB, internet tethering is no longer available.
Has anybody had the same problem or has anybody ideas how to solve this problem?
I would really appreciate your help!
I have already reset the network settings which didn't solve the problem.
Thanks so much for your help,
maddoc05

That won't be applicable to the case of maddoc05. Personal hotspot was introduced with 4.3 while the original post mentioned 4.2.1. I don't think the 3G was in the allowed list for the 4.3 update.

maddoc05: There were a few threads along the lines of what you experienced but I can't remember what the net result was. You could try contacting your mobile provider - it might be that they can force your phone to pick up the profile again.

Hi there,

I got the same problem when upgrade from 3.1.x to 4.2.1 (mine iphone is 3G, unlocked and I'm from Thailand). And same like everyone using iphone 3G, I was not aware of disappearing "Internet Tethering" option after move to ios 4.2.1

However I got it fixed by removing profile (it should be under setting>general>network>profile or something close because I could not see Profile Option anymore after removing it). In my case there were 2 profiles found, one is from AIS (my operator in Thailand) and another one in which I have no idea how it comes.

Just remove these profile setting all, then go to Reset and then "Reset Network Settings".

Afterward iphone will restart, thenthe field "Internet Tethering" is back.

And it works fine afterward for me (btw I use bluetooth connection from my Mac to my iphone).

Hope this help. At least this is works for me with iphone 3G (unlocked and operator is AIS, Thailand)
