Home Sharing with Apple TV2 Broken After 4.2 Update

It looks like I have some company with at least similar issues. This is very frustrating and support was no help.

ATV 2 worked just great with Windows 7 64-bit and iTunes library until the 4.2 update was loaded. Now ATV 2 keeps telling me to turn on home sharing on a computer but it's already on and iTunes is running, I'm using iTunes 10.2.1.1 and Apple TV2 with latest update 4.2 (2060) and connection over WIFI. Home Sharing is enabled on my computer and ATV2 using the same Apple ID and password. I can get to YouTube and the iTunes store from my ATV 2 without issue.

I've attempted many solutions from what I could find online but no luck:

1. Turned off/on home sharing on both the Apple TV 2 and in iTunes (multiple times)
2. Re-entered my Apple ID and password on both ATV 2 / iTunes
3. Restarted iTunes and ATV 2
4. Restarted the DSL modem/router (ZyXEL PK5000z)
5. Turned the firewall completely off (Norton Internet Security - firewall is off in router)
6. Restored ATV 2 over WIFI
7. Reinstalled iTunes
8. Changed my Apple ID and password then reset in iTunes and ATV 2
9. Renamed my itunes library
10. Disabled QoS upstream/downstream protocol in my DSL modem/router
11. Restored ATV 2 through USB connection in iTunes. This worked for a few minutes but after I turned off ATV 2 and later tried again it was back to it not working...

Any other ideas?

After spending hours on the phone with first Apple and then Verizon, I am now supposed to get on the phone to ActionTec - the router maker. ***?

This is a horrible situation. I have done everything the rest of you guys have except mess with the port forwarding. That's what I need to call ActionTec for. Is it worth my time?

OK, I am not a techie (though one might call me a Trekkie) but I just solved my problem. Trial and error didn't work and neither did over 1.5 hours of various tech supports. However, a CNET article did the trick:

Specifically section 2, which discusses adding iTunes to the security preferences area (see the article). I also reset my iTunes password, first on my computer and then on the ATV2, but I really doubt that had anything to do with my ATV connecting to iTunes Home Sharing.

Good Luck, my friend.

Sure thing, Corm:

The second-generation Apple TV is now shipping, and a few owners who have received their units are having difficulties with sharing and streaming from their Macs. Even though iTunes is set up to share home folders or libraries, the Apple TV is not seeing them on the network even though the previous AppleTV was able to do so on the same network.

Apple does have a few knowledgebase articles available that discuss how to set up and troubleshoot various features of the second-generation Apple TV, so if you are having problems you may wish to read through those. These articles include home sharing setup and troubleshooting, as well as photo screensaver setup.

If you still cannot see the home folder or otherwise connect your Apple TV to your computer after following the instructions in Apple's help articles, then the problem is likely with your computer's configuration and could be from an improper version of iTunes, or issues with your firewall.

Ensure you have iTunes 10.0.1 installed: When setting up your Apple TV, first be sure to update iTunes to version 10.0.1 (or later), since this version is required for proper compatibility with the new Apple TV. With version 10.0.0 or earlier, you may find that various sharing and streaming connectivity will not work properly.

2. Reset application firewall: You can add applications to the firewall list by either using the plus button or dragging and dropping them. For the network connections between the Apple TV and iTunes to work, the system's firewall needs to allow the connection. If you have the firewall enabled, be sure you have set the firewall to allow incoming connections for iTunes. To do this, either launch the application and click "Allow" when the system prompts you to set the firewall settings, or go to the "Security" system preferences and add iTunes to the application list, then set it to allow incoming connections.

Another option may be to fully reset the application firewall. If there is corruption in the firewall settings, then doing this can be a quick way to fix it. To reset the firewall, first turn it off in the "Security" system preferences, and then go to the /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/ folder and remove the com.apple.alf.plist file. After this is done, you can optionally restart the computer, but then turn on the firewall again.

3. Do not modify the iTunes program: We have covered various options for modifying iTunes 10 to add colors back to the sidebar, and though this should not affect the program's functions, some have reported that doing this results in the application firewall continually asking to allow incoming connections for the program. If you allow the connections, they should work, but you may need to do this each time the program is launched for the connections to be properly established, and if you forget to click "Allow" then the Apple TV will not be able to connect.
