"Reply All" re-sends to me! So annoying!

When there is a convo between a group, or an email sent directly to me (with others CC'd), when I "reply all", it puts my email in the cc spot.

I do NOT have the "cc me on everything" checked in preferences. I have checked my address book and made sure there is only 1 entry for my email. It doesnt matter if i was a cc or it was sent directly to me, I am always included and when I send I get an email in my inbox from myself. I have to physically delete my contact from the reply all email to not receive it.

some technical info. the email address i use is gmail. that in turn forwards to my mobile me account. Mobile me pushes to all my devices. its mobile me that is set up on my mac mail NOT GMAIL. The outgoing server is setup to send through gmail, though, so that people see emails as coming through my gmail, not mobile me. hope that makes sense and you can help! thanks!

I have a solution to this. It is not as simple or as obvious as taking yourself off the CC to list. I've posted this elsewhere but thought best to put it up here as it's an issue seen with gmail accounts and a lot of Mac and iPhone users...

The answer to this is...

Make sure your email address that is registered in Mac's Mail program under Preferences, Accounts, is exactly the same as the account's version of the address.

Here's my example:

xxx.xxx@gmail.com was the name used in Mac's Mail program and on my iPhone. This works fine and is acceptable because @gmail.com is a replacement for @googlemail.com

The account when I set it up was @googlemail.com.

I changed the xxx.xxx@gmail.com to xxx.xxx@googlmail.com and both the iPhone and the Mac's Mail program now exclude me when replying to all.

You must ALSO change the outgoing mail server information to smtp.googlemail.com to make this function. It still works with gmail on the incoming mail server but changing that to googlemail is recommended.

This is due to the mail programs not recognising the alias automatically and therefore not pruning the address when required. This is an issue that Apple needs to solve if it can be done without breaking other rules that are obviously there for a reason.

If you don't use googlemail and your mail account doesn't have the replacement option like gmail, you'll still have to find a solution.

its the same (generally) as the mac mail users. i was having the same problem with an exchange server account after switching from mac mail to outlook (still not sure that was a good idea). never the less, go to outlook/preferences/accounts and make sure the email in the address field is the email people are emailing you to. for example - at our company i have three aliases, but pretty much everyone uses one of those for me consistantly because of the area in which i work. however, when the account was set up, the umbrella company email was used. i switched it to what i get emailed to the most and it was fixed immediately!

I had the same problem reinstalling Lion, everytime I replied all I was recopied. I do have an alias. Solution: found this in another thread and wanted to share.

In OS LION Mac Mail program, add additional email (alias)addresses in Preferences -> Accounts -> "Account Information" tab -> "Email Address" entry, separated by one comma and a space each. This prevents Mail from replying to myself.

example: joe@gmail.com, joesalias@gmail.com

this resolved my issue and no more reply alls yay!!

good luck!

If you are using exchange and don't have Outlook you may find that the email address field in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information is disabled so you cannot add additional email addresses. You can still fix this issue in Mavericks by editing ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist searching for the following line:

  1. <key>EmailAddresses</key>
  2. <array>
  3. <string>default.email.address@example.com</string>
  4. </array>

And then adding in the address that people are actually sending email too:

  1. <key>EmailAddresses</key>
  2. <array>
  3. <string>default.email.address@example.com</string>
  4. <string>another.email.address@example.com</string>
  5. </array>

Then restart Mail. If you go to Preferences > Accounts > Account Information you should now see

in the Email Address field.

I was unable to edit my address field in the preferences section, and this worked for me. No more CC'ing to myself!

I found a solution for El Capitan:

  1. On the top menu, go to Mail -> Preferences
  2. Click on the Accounts section at the top of the Preferences pane (might already be selected)
  3. Click on the account you want to edit on the left
  4. Click on the dropdown menu for Alias: and click Edit Aliases on the bottom
  5. Either:
    • Add an alias with a blank Full Name and your Email address
    • Remove the Full Name from the alias you already have
  6. Click OK

See images. This is the best way I can explain the issue. ** You must have an alias email address that delivers to the same mailbox.

The Exchange account email address is rodneystevens@company.com. rodneys@company.com is the alias. If I reply-all on a message that comes to rodneystevens@company.com, Mac Mail includes me in the reply since rodneystevens@company.com doesn't match rodneys@company.com which is in mail preferences.

By changing the email address in Mac Mail preferences to rodneystevens@company.com, I no longer am included in the recipients when I click reply-all.

It should be understood, though, that if someone sends an email to rodneys@company.com when it's setup as rodneystevens@company.com, I would again be included in the reply-all recipients.

I don't see that as strange behavior. When I click "reply to all" I expect I am included... as I am a part of "all".

This is even true when I use my Outlook at work. Regardless where my email is on the original (CC or TO), if I hit REPLY TO ALL, I get a message.

A work-around: Setup a rule that auto-deletes any emails sent TO you FROM you. Then at least you wont have to do it yourself.

This was very helpful - I suddenly started having this problem when I got a new machine (Lion), did migration assistant from a Snow Leopard machine, and had to set up my mail accounts.

When I implemented the solution as stated by relativitydrive, I stopped getting myself copied when I did reply all. However, there was a predictable bad side effect: my email now seems to others like it comes from my gmail account, rather than the account I was formerly using in Preferences (which is also setup in Gmail imap settings to be the "reply from" email address).

Here's the strange thing: when I switched the account email address listed in Mail Preferences back from the gmail address to the original address (the very address I started off with in Mail Preferences), the problem did not occur again - when I hit reply-all, Mail does not copy me!

Why this happened I don't know, but perhaps this will be useful to somewhere out there in googleland.

I have same problem as originally described by pieceolease; however in this case it is in Outlook 2011. So, "fixes" described here that relate to Mac Mail do not work.

It only started occurring after company moved our mail system to a new Exchange Server; think it was also happening on Windows version of Outlook, but I moved off that to Mac version (Outlook 2011) a while back so cannot test that right now.

Any thoughts ?

I'm having this same problem on Outlook 2011, Exchange 2010 and only since moving to Lion on a new system. My email usually ends up in the "To:" field, not the "CC:" field.

The main Mail account in Systems Prefs was for my @me.com account, but i changed that to my work email. Problem still exists.

For my work email, i have two alias. Full.name@ and <4letter-short-form>@ - in Outlook prefs i have only ever had my work email in the short-form associated with the account.

any real fix, or are we waiting on MS or Apple to fix this?
