MacKeeper/Zerobit Pop Up ad Problem

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to stop these MacKeeper/Zerobit pops from happening on my computer?

I've never used MacKeeper nor do I plan to ever use it now that this ad keeps popping up unwanted. What happens is I get this Mac "recommends" box that I have to click "Ok" for or completely quit Safari in order to get rid of it. Then there is this stupid ad for MacKeeper sitting there. I can seem to find anyway to get rid of it. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

It's a horrible little application without an uninstall utility ...

Make sure you remove all items on this list:

Applications/MacKeeper.app

In the System Library:
- /Library/Application Support/MacKeeper
- /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.AntiTheft.daemon
- /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.AntiVirus

In your User Library:
- /Users/yourname/Library/Preference/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper.plist
- /Users/yourname/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper
- /Users/yourname/Library/Caches/com.zeobit.MacKeeper
- /Users/yourname/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.Backup.agent
- /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plist

If you get an error message that an item is in use and can't be moved/deleted open Activity Monitor and find the process and Force Quit then delete it.

This problem has been driving me insane and spent around 5 hours today trying different suggestions, although I was reluctant to try the adware download suggested in many places. After trying to locate files in Finder and playing with settings in Safari and Chrome with no success I downloaded the free version of Sophos for Mac. WORKED LIKE A DREAM! Located the Vsearch file (only seemed to be one), cleaned it and running perfectly on both Chrome and Safari. Previously in Chrome the 'All cookies and site data' constantly showed various ad related items, including zeo/mackeeper and even when cleared would reappear with the opening of one site, since the Sophos clean there is no trace of any unwanted cookies. I would recommend trying this to anyone experiencing the issue.

Yes, that's exactly the problem is that it only removed one file, which probably left many more behind.

If you aren't willing to try AdwareMedic which can tell you where all the rest of those files are located and you can remove them manually or let AdwareMedic do it for you or you can consult this list of where any others might still be Adware Removal Guide : DownLite

looking at the thread there has been a lot of discussion regarding this issue. The easiest thing I found was to nip in to the flash player options and delete all files that it has stored. I'm no tech person but i had the issue for a day, flash player was always pants so guessed this would be the issue. Once the files where deleted within the flash player options hey presto, no popup from that **** Mac keeper. Anyway hope this helps.

Hey guys, I had the same problem for many weeks and I did got the http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php. It safe, security and very very fast to clean your mack. It's free and of course have the option to Donate. I did donate because I sow how good was the program.

P.S. This freak Mackeeper is so afraid of this program that when you try to open using Google Chrome it will show that can't display the page, so you open in Safari and it will open normally and you can install.

See you guys.

Just go to the Finder and click application, and then remove the image of mackeeper to the trash.

And then there will be a webpage to inform you remove the mackeeper, and just go on.

Also, most importantly, check out this to remove the software that is downloaded with mackeeper and causes a lot of problems.

Hi...

I am so surprised to find the problem. The problem of showing green zooming in words and ads are caused by mackeeper as well as installmac. The former have been familiar to everyone, but the later one almost is not known for anyone, and people tried to install abp but still doesn't work. Installmac is a search engine that inbed in your webpage, and it is often downloaded with mackeepter, AND that is why people still confront same problem after they remove mackeeper, and people without mackeeper still confront with the same problem. After I removed installmac, all the problem are solved: No ads anymore, No pop-up....

Now I tell you how to remove installmac: Check out this method.

1)OPEN safari

2) look at the top bark: open safari>preference>extension

3) there is a button "Unit..", please chick the button to remove software that was created by any third party.(There is a special pop-up in the youtube website, and I found "cinema light", and after I remove it, there is no problem when i open youtube now.)

4) Remove installmac by "unit.." the installmac.

5) Remove installmac as the search engine:

In the Safari Preferences go to the General tab and change the Default Search Engine to Google to Bing or Yahoo

  1. Close the Preferences window, open Safari and run a search (any random word). The results should be from Bing or Yahoo’s (as you selected).
  2. Return to the Preferences window and change it back to Google.

I hope this will help you all to enjoy your safari experience again!!!

Please help me to let more people know about this!!
