iTunes cannot backup because backup is corrupt

When I attach my iPhone to sync I am getting a message after the top menu says it is backing up the phone: "ITunes cannot backup the iPhone because the backup is corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone--delete the backup for this iPhone, then try again". I have already mistakenly done a restore and lost a lot of my contacts because this message appeared and I could not figure how to delete the backup. Now after the restore I am still getting the message. How do I delete the backup and try again so I am able to sync? Thanks, POOTYDavid

This Can also happen if the computer is not run under and administrator account or does not have the correct Access rights to the App data folder-

My situation,

user was unable to backup iphone via work PC, they did not have Read/write access to the Appdata folder

Ran Itunes under the administrators account (right click on itunes - Run as administrator) entered admins username and password

Was then able to view Backups and create them

Previously there was no other backups listed

What a snotty response. How do you know what the user did? I have followed all the steps and am still getting the same error. I have lost track of how many times iTunes has deleted contacts and just overall did a pisspoor job of syncing devices. Apple should learn from Microsoft Activesync which is a million times better in terms of "do no harm". If you want us to keep buying Apple products, drop the attitude.

>>>>😁THIS IS THE FIX😁<<<<

FIRST TRY THIS:

1 - Open iTunes
2 - Click: Edit>Preferences
3 - Click: Devices

4 - Select: A backup file
5 - Click: Delete Backup...

6 - Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all backups are deleted

7 - Close window and re-try backing up iPhone using normal method

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK, TRY THE FOLLOWING:

First... going to clarify some instructions above then add some new information. 🙂

If you still have the device (with the files on it) to make a new backup, you should completely erase the existing backup (or rename the folder for it, which is good enough to "hide" it from iTunes) and then make a fresh backup.

On a Mac your backups are in /Users/<your username>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

(Open Finder, hold the Option key, and select "Library" from the Go menu to get to your user's Library folder.)

On Windows, the fastest way to get to your backup folders is:

- (Windows 7 and below) Start -> Run -> type %appdata% (with the percents) and press return.

- (Windows 8) Search -> type %appdata% (with the percents) and press return.

- (All) From Application Data, navigate to Apple Computer, Inc. -> MobileSync -> Backup.

You can match your device identifier with the backup folder name by clicking on the Serial Number field in iTunes (which will switch it to your device identifier.)

If you no longer have the device to make a new backup, then you're in more of a pickle. I work for a company that does iPhone/iPad/iTouch forensics, and we've seen these corrupted backups a lot recently -- so we decided to make a tool to fix them. You can try out Decipher Backup Repair, to look at what the errors are in your device's backup in iTunes, and see how we can resolve the errors. I'd love any feedback, if you want to contact us (via our website linked here) and provide it (feel free to mention my name, Kelly, since I do most of the work on Decipher Backup Repair.)

I hope this information helps someone if they have a corrupted backup!

(Note: As I mentioned, I work for the company I've discussed above, so I stand to benefit, either financially or otherwise, from the links I'm recommending.)

Thanks @anders kristian - that solved it for me. Like many other so-called "idiots" on this thread, I had no backups showing under iTunes, yet it would not let me perform a backup. Removing the symlink file from ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync fixed this.

And I'm shocked at Apple allowing such a Microsoft-ish error message as "Cannot perform backup because backup is corrupt". They need to start policing their UX and QA teams a bit more I think...

Hi Echel0n,

That is a weird fix, but I'm glad you guys found it! Was the MobileSync folder itself the symlink, or was there a symlink file inside of that folder?

I do a lot of work every day fixing corrupt backups, so I'm very curious how what you had happens. Anything you want to share is helpful for me!
