iTunes cannot backup because backup is corrupt

When I attach my iPhone to sync I am getting a message after the top menu says it is backing up the phone: "ITunes cannot backup the iPhone because the backup is corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone--delete the backup for this iPhone, then try again". I have already mistakenly done a restore and lost a lot of my contacts because this message appeared and I could not figure how to delete the backup. Now after the restore I am still getting the message. How do I delete the backup and try again so I am able to sync? Thanks, POOTYDavid

So far i have followed all the above listed steps. I have uninstalled and deleted everything then reinstalled. Deleted all traces of anything Apple from my PC and reinstalled and nothing. I am still unable to sync or back up my phone. Does anyone else have any suggestions? It would be nice if someone from Apple would chime in and tell us how to fix their crappy software.

I had this problem along with the "can not conect to itunes store" with all my devices. I am running windows 7, 64, itunes 10.4 (latest as of 9-21-11). After many ties from forum advice I found the problem to be with my internet security software, Bsecure. this is what they sent me and it fixed all my problems. Everything is working again. I was nervous about losing all my itunes music and such but didn't lose anything. Se below:

We have discovered that a number of parental control andantivirus products are having issues with the newest release of Itunes.Customers across all of these products have experienced the same symptoms thatyou have. We were even able to duplicate this issue on our own computers hereat Bsecure. In this same research we discovered a fix that includes removingeverything apple related from the computer, running a utility called CCleanerto ensure its all removed, then reinstalling itunes. We confirmed that thisworked with itunes 10.4 on this test machine at our office.

Please note the following,

  • You should still retain your itunes library through this process as you are not deleting them from your documents\music folder & you are not changing the version of itunes you are using.
  • CCleaner is an application produced by Piriform and Not by Bsecure. While we are going to assist you in installing and utilizing the product, please do so at your own risk.

Please use the steps below to complete this process,

  1. Click Start
  2. Open Control Panel
  3. Open Programs & Features
  4. Uninstall all applications related to apple in the order listedbelow,
  • Itunes
  • QuickTime
  • AppleSoftware Update
  • Applemobile Device Support
  • Bonjour
  • Appleapplication Support

Once these applications are all removed, reboot your system.

Now you will need to install CCleaner,

  1. Visit - http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
  2. Download and run the ccsetup310.exe
  3. Select English and click OK
  4. Click Next on the wizard
  5. Then Click I agree on the terms and conditions.
  6. Set install options how you would like (its ok to just hitinstall here if you have no preference)
  7. Click finish to launch Ccleaner and end the install
  8. Click yes on the popup that asks about intelligent cookies
  9. Click analyze at the bottom.
  10. Review the items listed and click 'run cleaner' (ensure you arenot deleting anything important to you)
  11. You will be prompted to delete files, click OK after you havereviewed the items in the list.
  12. Now click registry on the left
  13. Click scan for issues in the bottom right
  14. Click Fix Selected Issues
  15. Click Yes to backup changes to the registry
  16. Allow it to save your registry backup to the documents folder(this is by default)
  17. Click "fix all selected issues"
  18. Close out of Ccleaner and reboot your computer.

Now re-install itunes with this link,

Hope this helps other frustrated apple customers.

When I followed these steps I did not lose any data that I know of. I made a backup of the entire itunes media folder before hand because I haven't bought all of my music from itunes so I knew I wouldn't be able to replace it if lost.

I also have an app called Onsong that I use for music chord charts that I created a backup for but again I did not lose any data for that app. My problems just kept getting worse and more things ended up not working properly so finally I just had to do something. Don't regret doing it at all. Being a CAD person, software that doesn't work properly REALLY bugs me, just ask my wife.

Thanks!! I agree that it's ridiculous to give the instruction and not specify how to do it. I suspect it occured when I used an old ipod cable by mistake rather than my iphone cable. The sync took alot longer but did not indicate corruption until my following sync 1 week later. Thanks to google search and this thread-problem solved!
