MacBook Pro and Vizio HDMI problem

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro, a new Moshi Mini DVI to HDMI converter, HDMI cable, and a Vizio VW32L (32 inch HD TV). The MacBook detects the TV, but the TV only shows "Retrieving Data..." for a few seconds and then goes to blue with "No Signal!" showing.

Is there anything I can do? Is there something I don't know that would prevent this from working? Are there any settings on the TV or MacBook I can fiddle with to make this work?

No MacBook Pro uses mini-DVI. It uses mini-DisplayPort if it is newer than a certain generation, otherwise it uses DVI-D. Are you sure you got the right cable description?

What does your Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More info

say about your MacBook Pro x,x model.

MacBooks without the Pro name have used mini-DVI prior to a certain age, and after a certain time started using mini-Displayport. Knowing your exact model will tell us what connector you should be using.

If you are using a Pro and definitely a mini-DVI, I'm surprised your MacBook Pro sends any signal let alone doesn't get damaged in its port.

Yes, sorry, I mistyped. I am using a Mini Display Port. Everything else I said is still accurate.

I got on phone support with Apple, and they walked me through a bunch of steps. The computer detects the TV, but the TV doesn't detect the computer signal. Apple said call Vizio, as it may be a strange driver issue. Talking to Vizio support, they seem to be generally confused about what to do. They think if I could just select the right display resolution output, it would all work. I've tried every available display output, but no go.

1080i, which is 1366x768, and can also produce 720p.

That's probably part of the problem. Macs default to 1080p. A 720p is comparable to a 1024 x 768 resolution. Anything higher may not work on a purely 1080i display without additional software such as DisplayConfigX or SwitchResX. Even then, you may not get the full screen. The "i" resolutions are interlaced resolutions, where the "p" are progressive. Make sure the same resolution is in Apple menu -> System preferences displays, and Hz rate as is selected according to the TV manual.
