Broken accelerometer - Ipad 2 will not rotate - Stuck in portrait mode

There are a couple other posts about this, but one of them was fixed by rebooting and the other was where someone had the side switch set to lock orientation.

I have tried every combination of switch setting (mute/orientation lock) and rebooting but nothing works. It appears to be a problem with the accelerometer. I downloaded the labyrinth game to test it out and the ball just sits in the corner. No amount of shaking will move it.

Anybody else seeing this problem?

I have the same problem.I have checked the side switch function as well as the rotate screen function in the home settings screen by double clicking the home button swiping to the left and setting the screen to "unlocked". I have restarted my iPad several times still no luck. In addition I have backed it up on iTunes, downloaded and installed iOS and had the system reset, all to no avail. The screen shows as being unlocked but it simply won't rotate. Reading on the forums it appears my gyro may be broken?

I had this problem. No rotation, no accelerometer in applications which use it.

After struggling for a while with software methods (switching on and off rotation, resetting, restoring,...), tired from the long week of work and from the cold, I beat my iPad 2 pretty hard on its left side on a wooden table.

This worked for me!

At the moment I can not find any damage on the device, still I can not reccomend this method.

What I can learn from this story is that the problem can be an hardware problem and that the iPad is pretty hard to break...

Had this problem as well. Tried everything: reset, reset all settings, tapping the device etc. to no avail.

Tried installing a level app to test, and the accelerometer was completely dead. My conclusion: broken accelerometer.

As this was too expensive to have fixed, I looked to a way to switch the orientation in software, so here's how to do this:

Go into Settings --> Accessibility --> Triple click --> and enable AssistiveTouch

Now when you triple click a little dot will appear on screen. Tap that, then tap Device, the Rotate Screen and you can change orientation even though the accelerometer is dead.

Now to the most surprising part: after doing this, my accelerometer has started working again, hurrah. I don't know if this will be the case for everyone ( obviously if your accelerometer is really dead, it will not work for you), but even if it does not work, you will be able to manually change orientation.

I had the same problem with my iPad Air that was brand new. After about 30 minutes on the phone with Apple Support (who are always so nice)it still wasn't resolved. We had come to the point where the last solution would have been to revert it to factory settings or send it back. Luckily I had to download the latest version of iTunes, and scheduled a call back. I have a Smart Cover for my iPad and began to wonder if the magnet had somehow caused the gyroscope to jam (since it does snap on back directly where the gyroscope is located). While running the Gyroscope app I took the corner where it snaps and ran it along the edge where the power and volume rockers are, and wellah!!! The gyroscope immediately responded and was back to working perfectly. Won't be using my Smart Cover anymore though.
