Is there a way to lock/hide apps or folders?

I have searched the forums but have not found a definite answer.

I'd like to either hide or lock some of my FPS games so my kids cannot access them.

Is there a native way to do this? Or do I need an app? And if so, what app is recommended. Don't necessarily need pw protection, just a way to hide a folder.

TIA.

If you have gone into settings and created a restriction so that. Your child can't purchase apps, the App Store icon does not appear on the iPad. if that is the case, all you have to do is go into restrictions and untick that particular restriction... the App Store icon will then appear and then once you've bought what you want, you can reset the restriction if you want to. Hope this helps.

To hide your FPS games on your iOS device...

  1. Simply go to 'Settings'
  2. Go to 'General'
  3. Scroll down until you see 'Restrictions.'
  4. Open up 'Restrictions'
  5. Tap on 'Enable Restrictions.'
  6. Enter and reenter a passcode for 'Restrictions.'
  7. Go down to 'Allowed Content: Apps' to control the FPS games on your iOS device.
    1. A simple solution would be to tap 'Don't Allow Apps,' which will temporarily disable any Apps downloaded from the App Store.
    2. A little more complex solution is to only allow apps 4+, 9+, etc., so only certain Apps are accessable on your iOS device.

*Make sure to check the ratings the App Store displays for the FPS games you have mentioned.

**If the FPS games are rated 12+, then you would go ahead and tap on 9+ to hide and temporarily lock them.

Reminder: Any Apps rated 12+ and above would be hidden and temporarily 'locked,' so to speak.

This is the only native way to do this unless you want to delete the Apps completely from your iOS device.

So far, there is no real app that can do this and the native way is the most simple and safe way you can do this (opposed to 3rd party apps).

The process hides the FPS games, but you can always reverse the process by going to 'Restrictions' and tap on 'Allow All Apps,' so you can access them and not your kids. It is like an on and off switch for the FPS games.

Make sure you remember your 'Restrictions' passcode.

If you have any further questions, please ask them and I hope this solved all of your inquiries.

I thought I would jump in on this subject due to a little problem I'm having that fits in here. Since upgrading to 4.3 I can no longer locate the apple app store icon on my Ipad 1..... No kidding! The only other possible explaination is that I let my 7 year old Grandson use it yesterday and if he could hide it, he would but I didn't think that was possible (along with other apple device apps).

I have not found another issue similar to this anywhere. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

the ipad is designed to be a single user device, so there is no support for partitioning or multiple users. As a result of that there is no real parental controls beyond the restrictions.

Access to that part of Apple's core programming isn't something they generally allow to app developers. The most you can really do is to send Apple feedback, telling them of the need for parental control and see if they will respond.

An app or even part of the iOS, this would be a great function to have.

My 5 year old loves playing games like Disney's Water? on the iPad. The only problem is, is that as it only allows 1 player and he ends up playing over my game and it drives me insane 🙂

If there was a way to either hide it OR even have 2 copies installed would be perfect!

Maybe the easy answer though is to just go and buy him his own iPad 😉

For me it's not a matter of "don't let people snoop through your stuff!". or "don't buy apps you're embarrassed to have".

The iPad I have is NOT mine, it belongs to my daughter who has autism. She uses it as a speaking aid for her, and also to play some cool educational games and whatnot. I have the restrictions on the maximum settings and STILL there is so much default JUNK on there I can't get rid of! PLEASE let me get rid of the calendar, PLEASE let me get rid of the notepad on there, PLEASE let me get rid of the contacts list. Lately her thing is moving her apps around. She only has like 10, but she'll go through and put one on each screen, or put all the ones she needs the most in hard-to-find places.

Yesterday I got on there and she'd deleted half the pictures used in her speaking aid app! Because you can't restrict your own photo album!

GRAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!

You know how many HOURS goes into something like that?! I've gone through the settings with a fine tooth comb and there's no way to keep her from doing that!

IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!

I get how it's frustrating. On the upside, depending on the last time you backed it up, you can wipe it then restore from backup and rewind the clock so to speak.

I know it's no solution, but you can send apple feedback and let them know. I don't disagree at all, as much as the iPad is being touted as an assistive and learning device that there should be some more robust controls to prevent such things. Unfortunately, such things come from Apple themselves since they deal wiht a core part of the device that they don't usually let app developers deal with.

I know that some folks need to hide their **** or other "adult" materials from the other half or the kids. That's not my issue.

I'm looking for a way to lock away some apps that require wi-fi (can you say "Netflix") when I don't have access (like in the car). If the app "isn't there" the kiddo can't get frustrated because the app can't connect to the internet. I've about kid-proofed the iPad - this is the last remaining frustration. I'm under warranty, so jailbreaking isn't happening.
