Why no Select All in email?

With no spam filter and a very shaky mail program the least Apple could have done was provided a select all option in the mail preview pane to assist in deleting spam -- which is about 90% of what I get in iPad2. Mail always hangs for me as well.

I have the same issue. My desktop "Mail" app filters the SPAM just fine. However, my IOS devices get it all. My server SPAM filters do a good job on all of my desktops and laptops. Not sure why they SPAM makes it through to my IOS devices.

It would be GREAT to be able to do mass deletes of mail. I now have 1000's of e-mails on my iPad and iPhone, and I don't have time to do individual deletes.

The spam filter in your desktop Mail app may be finding the spam. If it is coming into your ios inboxes your email provider mail servers are not filtering it.

In that case, go into native webmail, delete spam en mass from the inbox, and strengthen the spam filter level. You may have exposed your email address online too much. If I get more than two spams a week its a bad week for me.

It just amazes me how many other "Smart" devices have what seem to be basic features like their desktop cousins. Yet Apples Smart device doesn't and has hoards of people telling you that you don't need them or to change things to accommodate the phone...

Definition "Smart Device"

An electronic device generally connected to other devices or networks via different protocols such as Bluetooth-NFC-WiFi-3G-etc. that can operate to some extent interactively and autonomously to accommodate the user thru automation, consolidation and access to data.

I have added my suggestions to the apple suggestions box hoping with each version I get features that would make using Exchange e-mail and others as fluid as other phones. But so far the HTC Evo phones default mail app beats the IOS mail app, I even have a Blackberry Z10, and even though this phone isn't popular in the masses and they are 3 years to late, the mail app on that by far puts the mail iOS app to shame.

The bottom line is iOS still has a lot to be desired, so we have to make due and wait till these features come to fruition on this platform or go and use what works for you. I myself will make due with the iOS mail app as my company is in bed with Apple. But for my personal phone I will stick with the Z10, which oddly enough I use for work e-mail :-)

I think the key is that the ipad is not really designed for productivity/ creation of content. It's for consuming content. I use IMAP mail and do all the organizing on my computer, and let the ios devices just tag along. It's fine except when I'm away from home for extended periods.

In similar vein, I have yet to find a decent word processor. There are many Word wannabes, all with some great features but each one has at least one major deficiency. Ditto spreadsheets, excel they typically have more deficiencies.

I'm not clear how much this is due to inherent limitations of being a tablet, versus positioning by Apple so as not to cannibalise the Mac Air etc. I have to assume the latter is never far from their minds.

Even tablets like ipad have browsers to allow access to webmail. Most like hot/Outlook mail give a PC Site option where mass cleanups can and should be done. Even better use your Mac.

Desktops and laptops will always do a better job with things like media. Tablets will only do a subset but are still powerful in their way.

And I still read complaints of "thousands of emails on my ipad" . Well ok, delete the mail account and add it back with a seven day sync. Voila, all gone from ipad except the last weeks worth.

The frustrating thing is this code, feature and function is already developed and it's an easy win for everyone - it's a feature that can be enabled/disabled in settings - but in this day and age it baffles me why we don't have it unless there is a large 'spam producers lobby' that has money on the table to prevent it. We certainly get incremental updates to connect the Apple Watch and other stuff. Or - perhaps there would be a spike in support calls to get inadvertently deleted email back?

Bottom line: For those who have multiple devices to view email, we need this functionality (select all - deselect some - delete).
