Font problems after 10.6.7

I'm getting lots of strange behaviour relating to fonts since updating to 10.6.7. This is all in things that used to work perfectly.
PostScript output causes errors in Distiller (problems in font definitions); and manipulating PDF objects can cause embedded fonts to become .... unembedded.

As I understand it, there were lots of security fixes to font handling in the update, but it seems to have caused loads of trouble.

The developers for an app I use, Imposition Wizard, have confirmed that things aren't working as they are supposed to and have filed bug reports with Apple.

However, as I do a lot of work with PostScript and PDFs, I will have to reinstall the OS to 10.6.6.

That is true, but they're buried in the Acrobat Reader's application package. So as far as the OS is concerned, they're not available for the user. You can copy them out if into a Fonts folder if you want, and then you will be able to use those fonts.

I am almost certain I never copied any fonts out any Reader 7 or 8 app package, but they may have gotten into /Library/Fonts/ via migration from an older Mac running OS 9 or Classic or something.

There's a few Multiple Master fonts hidden in there, but if you copy the OpenType fonts out, you'll have these to use:

No sign of AdobePiStd or the CourierStd fonts anywhere on my systems, but I have 10 MinionPro fonts (4 of which apparently are from PSE 9) as well as the Minion Pro ones already mentioned. AFAIK, none have ever been available exclusively through an Adobe app.

Adobe does make corrections to the fonts without really telling anyone. The copy of of MyriadPro-It.otf I have is version 2.037, but the one in the Acrobat Reader X is 2.062. So those minor changes could determine if Myriad Pro works for you or not under 10.6.7.

I have MyriadPro-It.otf 2.062, apparently installed with PSE 9. I'm assuming that is the latest version. As noted, I'm having no problems at all with any fonts, OpenType or otherwise. I do not have a printer with a built-in Postscript interpreter or any Adobe product currently installed other than PSE 6 & 9, which may be part of it, but I can generate PDF's with Apple's PDF generator that cause no problems on my Macs or on the Macs or PC's of friends & associates that I have sent them too.

It's all very puzzling. Different people have different problems or none at all, & there doesn't seem to be any correlation with anything that explains why. 😟

I've tried to compare what's actually installed on my machine and the lists that you cited.
One change is HelveticaNeue.ttc on the list is HelveticaNeue.dfont on my machine.
Could this be my problem?

Also, missing from Library/Fonts on my machine are Brush Script.ttf, Comic Sans MS Bold.ttf, Georgia Bold Italic.ttf, Georgia Bold.ttf, Georgia Italic.ttf, Impact.ttf, Tahoma Bold.ttf, Trebuchet MS Bold Italic.ttf, Trebuchet MS Bold.ttf, Trebuchet MS Italic.ttf
Is the fact that these are not there a problem?

Thanks again

It is one issue in itself. In Snow Leopard, the .ttc (TrueType Collection) version replaced the .dfont of earlier versions of OS X. If the .ttc version is missing from the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, you'll need to retrieve it from the OS X install disks. The .dfont version should be removed since that's not the version SL is expecting to be on the system. More on that in a moment.

When it comes to web display in particular, very likely. Tahoma and Trebuchet in particular are used heavily on the web.

Without having to resort to reinstalling the entire OS, you can install just the fonts from the OS X disk. Follow the instructions at the bottom of Font Management in OS X to see how to restore just the fonts.

I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

We need a fix yesterday.

From some of the recent comments, to expedite a fix it might be helpful to post a list of the Myriad Pro fonts you have installed & the version numbers of each of them. If you are using Apple's Font Book as your font manager, you can get that info from it by entering "Myriad" in its search box & selecting "Show Font Info" from the "Preview" menu. This will also list any other Myriad fonts you have installed, which might also be relevant.

If you have some other font manager installed it may have a similar feature, but remember that you should have only one font manager installed & active at a time. If two or more are, you will most likely get unpredictable results, including some of the reported problems.

Sorry, didn't explain that thoroughly. Right click on the Acrobat Reader X and choose "Show Package Contents". Then dig down to /Contents/Resources/Resource/Font/. You'll find the 13 OT PS fonts I listed in there.

It's all very puzzling. Different people have different problems or none at all, & there doesn't seem to be any correlation with anything that explains why. 😟

To say the least! A few have noted they have no trouble with Myriad Pro, much less other OT PS fonts. Just when you think you've got an idea pointing to the problem, another person says it works for them. The only constant is 10.6.7 is where all the trouble started. But is it a fault in the changes made to OS X, or are the changes correct, but broke a long standing error in Acrobat?

Either way, Apple is likely the one who will have to fix it. If nothing else, by reverting to the code used in 10.6.6 for the affected issue. It would simply be far too difficult for Adobe to fix the issue, and then have millions, perhaps billions, of Mac and Windows users update their copies of Acrobat Pro and/or the Reader.

After waiting 2 weeks for Apple to get around to repairing my faulty... and business dependent iMac i bought a new 2011 MacBook Pro because i can't afford to lose my clients...

I got home booted it up and it turns out it has 10.6.7 on it... my fonts are screwed same as everyone else here so it looks like i still won't be getting any work done...

Can you please push an update immediately to fix the issue... honestly, you guys make it so freaking hard to run a legitimate business

Sorry I do not understand much about fonts ... but here is the simple way I use to demonstrate the problem.
My issue is with printing from Preview of PDF document containing MyriadPro.
I used textedit to create a text,
changed the font to MyriadPro,
and Print to PDF,
it opens in Preview in which I select to print.

My printer prints the following
----------------------------
ERROR: invalidfont
OFFENDING COMMAND : definefont

STACK:

/Font
-dictionary-
/OMHAGQ+MyriadPro-Regular
-mark-

----------------------------

If I try to open the PDF in Acrobat, I have errors "Cannot extract the embedded font 'OMHAGQ+MyriadPro-Regular'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."

This only since 10.6.7.
