I recently purchased a time capsule and set it up to wirelessly connect to my home network. After some reading I've found out that I can access the time capsule when away from home. I've read that there is normally a spot to check "share disks over WAN" but I have "share disks over the internet using bonjour". Now I have tried to share the disk using bonjour and I can't figure out how to access it after this step is completed. Can anyone help??
(Note: The following procedure will only work if the Time Capsule (TC) is the router directly connected to Internet modem. It will NOT work if the TC is a downstream router behind another router.)
To share out the TC's internal drive to the Internet:
Configuring the TC
AirPort Utility > Select the TC o Note the value of the IP Address. This is the Public or WAN-side IP address of the TC. (Note: You will need to have either a static Public IP address, or use a free dynamic DNS service in order to access the TC from the Internet. This is something Back to my Mac (BTMM) would have make simple for you.)
Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection o Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
Manual Setup > Disks > Files Sharing tab o Enable file sharing (checked)
o Secure Shared Disks = With base station password
o AirPort Disks Guest Access = Not allowed
o Share disks over Ethernet WAN port (checked)
Manual Setup > AirPort > Base Station o Enter a Base Station Password and verify it in the Verify Password box.
Manual Setup > Advanced > Port Mapping o Click the plus sign "+" to add a new port mapping.
o In the Public UDP Port(s) and Public TCP Port(s) boxes, type in a 4-digit port number (e.g., 5688) that you choose.
o In the Private IP Address box, type the internal IP address of your TC that you noted earlier.
o In the Private UDP Port(s) and Private TCP Port(s) boxes, type 548, and then, click Continue.
o In the Description box, type a descriptive name like "Time Capsule File Sharing," and then, click Done.
o When you have made all the changes, click Update.
Connect the MacBook Pro to the TC from a remote location o In the Finder, click Go > Connect to Server.
o Type in the correct domain name or external IP address for your network, plus a colon and the port number you specified when configuring the TC earlier. For example,"www.myTC.com:5688" or "145.200.112.108:5688".
o Click Connect.
o You will be prompted for your user name and password. The user name can be anything you like; the password would be the TC's Base Station password you defined earlier.
o Click Connect.
You should now be connected to the TC's internal drive from your MBP. (Note: The TC will appear in the Shared section of your Finder's sidebar as a server with TC's Base Station Name as the server name.)
Thanks for the help! I was hoping that there would be some way to share if the Time Capsule was down stream... When I had it directly connected to the modem I could share over the internet perfectly fine. However, when this method was employed the all machines that connected to the Time Capsule for wireless internet were unusually slow ie. loading any internet page took forever and same for downloads. So I guess my next question is how to fix the slow speed (if it's a common issue and easy fix). and two what is the sharing using bonjour? (strictly out of curiosity)
So how would the setup be different for a MobileMe subscriber? I just bought a Time Capsule and I am a MobileMe user, I can't believe how little information there is regarding this feature. I have no use for Time Machine but I would like to have access to some files while I'm away from my house.
I think that I tried that too I believe I opened port 548?? I think I read somewhere that that was the designated Time Capsule port. But again I come back to how do I then access the Time Capsule after doing this the same way as if it were being shared over WAN?? (as in going to connect to server and entering the designated IP)
So, this is exactly what I am trying to do. I followed the procedure exactly, but I run into a problem when trying to enter the IP address in the port map. There is an input mask that restricts the first part of the IP address. That keeps me from putting in my IP address for the Time Capsule because the first several digits are different. The airport utility restricts the IP address to starting with 10.0.1... Since my IP address for the TC starts with something different, it won't let me enter the right one on the port map screen. Any thoughts?
Helllo Tesserax, I have seen you try to help everyone so I would like to ask you to help me with this following point that I dont know how to do: "how to use a free dynamic DNS service". I mean what I have to do in detail.
I've been fighting for such a long time with my Time Capsule. I have no idea how to gain access "over-the-internet" on a PC which is running in another network. My Time Capsule is set up with my Macbook Pro running Lion OSX, and i have internet connection. My brother who also uses Macbook has no problems connecting to my Time Capsule. But how do I gain "over-the-internet" access to my Time Capsule through a PC from my office for an example? Is there please someone who can guide me step-by-step, how to gain connection to my TC through a PC? This was the main reason to why i bought Time Capsule. I also have an iCloud account (earlier Mobile Me), if that makes any difference. 🙂
